Planned usemanually used for individual bridges in Czechia which have its own Wikidata item - for the future, possible mass Wikidata import (e.g. from the linked complete list of municipal bridges of Prague)
Number of IDs in sourcethe Czech Roads and Motorways Directorate (ŘSD) registers over 18,000 numbered bridges in the Czech Republic (but this database has no public output); municipal bridges, private bridges and railway bridges can have their own numbering systems; bridges are numbered also at least in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Prague road manager (TSK) listed ca 600 numbered bridges, the list is available, but not fully automatically processable.
Expected completenessdepends on possible mass imports for the future and manual processing of available lists and maps, however, for each bridge on the roads of I to III class in Czechia, the number can be traced
Robot and gadget jobsprocessing of Commons:Category:Bridges in Amsterdam by number and Commons:Category:Bridges in Rotterdam by number?

  • Motivation[edit]

In Czechia, bridge numbers are the main identifier especially of unnamed road bridges in extravillain. It is often used e.g. when the bridge is listed as a heritage monument, or in official notices of repair and exclusion of the bridge etc. Although this number is not used in the most common public maps (but only in very special maps), any bridge is usually (should be) visibly marked by a number plate. This number has a similar function to the name of named bridges or streets.

Although state and regional road bridges in Czechia use a unified numbering system, within which the identifier should be unique (and also contains the road number), municipal bridges on local roads use different specific numbering systems, in each municipality separately. Similar bridge numbering is also used at least for city bridges in Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. In general, it can be assumed that every road and bridge manager in every country has its own system of identifiers - somewhere only internal, somewhere it can be public.

I was looking for if there is any very general Wikidata property for any registration number or inventory number in Wikidata. I didn't find such any usable universal property – maybe, we can create it. In addition, I believe that bridges are such specific objects that their registration numbers require a specific property, similar to what we have, for example, for house numbering (even several house numbering systems).

Should any online databases for a particular area or numbering system appear in the future, we can then create an even more specific property for it and migrate concerned entries to it. Such a migration could be a relatively simple job for bots. For now, I suggest only a general property for any bridge numbering system, not working as an unique identifier.

Theoretically, this property could be concepted a bit more universally to cover also other similar places on roads or tracks – e.g. fords, river ferries, level crossings etc., if the same numbering system is used for them in that country. Theoretically, road fords and ferries in Czechia should also be numbered, but currently no Czech ford or ferry is part of any road. Back in the 1960s, some river ferries were operated by the road administration. ŠJů (talk) 23:17, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
