Welcome to Wikidata, Mohammed Sadat (WMDE)!

Wikidata is a free knowledge base that you can edit! It can be read and edited by humans and machines alike and you can go to any item page now and add to this ever-growing database!

Need some help getting started? Here are some pages you can familiarize yourself with:

  • Introduction – An introduction to the project.
  • Wikidata tours – Interactive tutorials to show you how Wikidata works.
  • Community portal – The portal for community members.
  • User options – including the 'Babel' extension, to set your language preferences.
  • Contents – The main help page for editing and using the site.
  • Project chat – Discussions about the project.
  • Tools – A collection of user-developed tools to allow for easier completion of some tasks.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask on Project chat. If you want to try out editing, you can use the sandbox to try. Once again, welcome, and I hope you quickly feel comfortable here, and become an active editor for Wikidata.

Best regards! ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:48, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sitelinks to Redirects[edit]

Hi - I am wondering if you are aware of the RFC here: Wikidata:Requests for comment/Allow the creation of links to redirects in Wikidata which indicates a strong consensus for modifying the software to allow links to redirects to be added directly in the Wikidata UI. This Phabricator ticket has been around for almost 5 years, but there doesn't seem to be much sign of progress. It would be really nice to at least have a dialogue with the development team about how to proceed here. I think this is the most urgent item the community has discussed over the past few years that has not been addressed at all by the developers. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:08, 21 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing me to it, I will look into the topic. Regards. Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 11:37, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

slave traders, and otherwise[edit]

I hope this wasn't wrong, but I deleted three examples from two of the Wikidata weekly summaries (1, 2) on the chat page, in response to @Dipsacus fullonum:'s comments there. If my interpretation of those queries (and therefore this action) was incorrect, I apologize. —Scs (talk) 00:03, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

short-urls[edit]

hi!
if i found it out correctly, you are the one who sends the wikidata newsletter, right?
i'd like to ask you whether it would be possible for you to avoid to use wiki shorturls and use the long original urls instead. the reasons for this are mentioned in w:de:Hilfe:Links#URL_von_Wikiprojekten (you can use the deepl translation. it seems ok.)
the only thing is that the long wikidata urls have to be encoded correctly. if you need help for this, please call me. -- seth (talk) 22:37, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message, seth! If we use the long original URLs then the Weekly summary gets supper long and unreadable in the wikitext. I read the page that you linked, and it does not seem necessarily harmful to use the short URL if people are reading the newsletter on wiki. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 12:13, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
hi!
it's not really harmful, but those short urls obfuscate the real urls. for example the original links can't be found via the special:linksearch page. -- seth (talk) 12:34, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In the Wikidata newsletter, we mostly use the short URLs for the SPARQL queries. These URLs are very long and specific, and it's unlikely that someone would look for them in search. Plus we always indicate clearly what is the purpose of the query, so people know what to expect before clicking on them. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 13:07, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
if anybody wants to see, where and which type of links to https://query.wikidata.org/... are added in wikipedia, then this guy will fail, because many of those links are hidden via a short url.
however, we don't forbid the usage of those urls on user talk pages at dewiki.
at least you should know that those short urls have several disadvantages.
finally, it's your decision. -- seth (talk) 13:28, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New query example[edit]

Hi I propose the following query example:

# Hungarian church buildigs sorted by confessions
#defaultView:Map{"hide": ["?layer"]}
SELECT
?templom ?templomLabel (SAMPLE(?templomLocation) AS ?templomLocation_) (SAMPLE(?templomImage) AS ?templomImage_)

(IF(?ref, "Calvinist" , " ") AS ?refLabel)
(IF(?evang, "Lutheran", " ") AS ?evangLabel)
(IF(?kat, "Catholic", " ") AS ?katLabel)
(IF(?ort, "Eastern Orthodox", " ") AS ?ortLabel)
(CONCAT(?refLabel, ?evangLabel, ?katLabel, ?ortLabel) AS ?layer)
WHERE {
  ?templom wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q16970;
          wdt:P17 wd:Q28;
  BIND(EXISTS { ?templom wdt:P31 wd:Q103842783. } AS ?ref)
  BIND(EXISTS { ?templom wdt:P31 wd:Q56242275. } AS ?evang)
  BIND(EXISTS { ?templom wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q2031836. } AS ?ort)
  BIND(EXISTS { ?templom wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q1088552. } AS ?kat)
  OPTIONAL { ?templom wdt:P625 ?templomLocation. }
  OPTIONAL { ?templom wdt:P18 ?templomImage. }
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en". }
}
GROUP BY ?templom ?templomLabel ?person ?personLabel ?ref ?evang ?kat ?ort

Texaner (talk) 16:00, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Texaner! Thank you for your query -- I have added it to Wikidata:Status_updates/Next#Did_you_know?. In the future if you have queries you'd like added to the Weekly Summary, please go ahead and add it directly to the newsletter. Cheers, -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 16:34, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this page in talk namespace?--GZWDer (talk) 05:55, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GZWDer. We want to make it easier for newer editors especially to be able to communicate correctly on wiki by using the Reply Tool. The tool is meant to be deployed on talk pages of all Wikimedia projects at some point. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 17:10, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This does not require a page in talk namespace - __NEWSECTIONLINK__ handles it. You may see [1].--GZWDer (talk) 12:18, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unsuccessful requests for adminship[edit]

Hi, I don't see a need to include unsuccessful requests for adminship in a newsletter that is sent out to thousands of users. It is unnecessary publicity for someone who already has failed RFA. Can you please stop including them next time? --Rschen7754 18:12, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Rschen7754: That's a good point. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 07:59, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The new Query_Builder[edit]

Good morning! Using the new Query_Builder I am trying to make a list of norwegian persons having the indentifier Norwegian historical register of persons ID (P4574): Identificator for a person in the Norwegian historical register of persons. Bot can not find a way doing this like inthe old queries where å question-mark was used. Can you help? Best regards Pmt (talk) 09:00, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Pmt: Is this what you're looking for: https://w.wiki/3xHR ? -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 11:24, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mohammed Sadat Thank you very much, that solves my question using the Norwegian historical register of persons ID (P4574) in new query builder. But how can I in addition list the result of P4574? Pmt (talk) 12:10, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pmt I'm not sure that I understood your question, could you please clarify? If you mean the results of the query above, then you would first need to run the query to get the list of Items (Norweigian persons) having the P4574 indentifier statement. See screenshot. -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 13:00, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mohammed Sadat Good morning! After some use I have now found the way to do it.So no further questions from me. Againn thank you for the assistance. Breg Pmt (talk) 07:11, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Additional question if possible. @Mohammed Sadat I have one additional question regarding lists in the query builder. Is it possible to have the labels listed. Like in this query https://w.wiki/3xmc where I have all norwegian women in WD with birthdate and place of birth? I want here to have the birthdate and place of birth listed. To compare I have asked at the queryservice for the same list. And again, rtha you in advance. As you may see queries is not my strongest use of WD :) Breg Pmt (talk) 19:16, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pmt: Unfortunately what you want can't be achieved in the Query builder (yet), sorry :)
The Query Builder is not meant to allow you to build queries with the full power of SPARQL.
Here is a query you can run on the Wikidata Query Service based on what you linked here: https://w.wiki/3zXj, or this (https://w.wiki/3zXm): the same query but written from scratch. Cheers, -Mohammed Sadat (WMDE) (talk) 18:29, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata weekly summary #521[edit]

Good afternoon. I could see that in New property proposals to review: Norges Nasjonalmuseum Creator ID have been listed. This proposal is not completed yet, so I think it should be removed from #521 untill transcluded to the list of proposed properties. Breg Pmt (talk) 19:25, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
