Wikidata:The Game/Flagged items[edit]

Great job! Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 10:33, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Sjoerddebruin! Though DavidMar86hdf deserves even more credit, he's been working on that page much longer than I did, but over a longer period of time, so it's not that easy to spot. Anyways, now that it's at a managable level, I think keeping it at/around zero should be much easier. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 11:24, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Flemish - Dutch[edit]

It is perfectly correct to call them Flemish because Flemish is a nationality, not a citizenship of state, but the definition in wiki data is 'nationality' not 'citizenship' so Flemish is perfectly okay and is also a definition allowed by wikidata.

It is completely wrong to call them Dutch (citizens of the Netherlands with the current Dutch flag) as they never were. I think my solution is better than yours because it is clearly wrong. Caravaggista (talk)

@Caravaggista: See, this is one problem with the multilingual nature of Wikidata – in Norwegian the property country of citizenship (P27) is called "statsborgerskap (land)", which specifies "citizenship (country)". The English name is also "country of citizenship". So yes, I agree they should not be called citizens of the Netherlands, but they can also not be citizens of Flemish people (Q242485), since that one by no means is a country. The Dutch name of the property seems to imply the same thing, since aliases of the name ("land van nationaliteit") are "staatsburger", etc. So I agree a solution needs to be found, but the way you have done it is not the right one in my opinion. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:43, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But your solution is wrong because they are and never were Dutch or from the Netherlands but they were Flemish and are called Flemish generally in English. They never were from the country called the Netherlands because the Netherlands broke away from what became the Flemish part which includes Antwerp etc. I find it very strange that a Flemish person has to be called a citizen of a country he was never a part of because the Norwegian language cannot distinguish between citizenship and nationality. It is like saying that Norwegians should be called Danish on wikidata because Swahili has no word for Norwegian but only for Danish. Caravaggista (talk)
@Caravaggista: Exactly, I'm not saying we should call them Dutch either. Like I said on your talk page, it may be better to remove the claim entirely, or find a more fitting one. The edits I reverted, I did without looking carefully enough (sorry about that), so I thought you were changing contemporary people's citizenship, not "old" people. I'm just saying that using country of citizenship (P27) at all for these items is probably not the best course of action. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 08:57, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What would you say if the page for Henrik Ibsen would state:
nationality: Swedish
I agree it might be better not to have a nationality in some cases, but then some person will come in and add the wrong thing. Please note that is is possible to have a Palestinian nationality for Yasser Arafat although there is also no Palestinian country (yet). My solution is better since Flemish people are not Dutch as much as they are not German, French, Danish or Norwegian. So there is no reason in the case of Flemish people to put the nationality as "the Netherlands" with the Dutch flag. So I will continue to make these changes as it is absurd to keep the nationality as the Netherlands. Caravaggista (talk)
@Caravaggista: Sure, you can change them to the one you were using until we have a better solution; at least that way it will be easier to fix everything at once later on. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:37, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it better to use ethnic group (P172) and remove country of citizenship (P27)? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:07, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

IPA[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that for all the IPA transcription (P898)'s you've been adding, you've been using apostrophes ('), but the constraints require that ˈ (U+02C8 Modifier Letter Vertical Line) be used instead. I'm dealing with the ones that already exist, just thought you should know for future reference. Popcorndude (talk) 13:24, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Popcorndude: Ah, shit. Another thing to copypaste instead of just using the keyboard… Thanks for fixing them, thatˈs awesome (see what I did there?). Will use the right one from now on. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:04, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata for Maxwell's equations[edit]

Hi Jon.
Maybe you can help me with a small problem. When I look at "Maxwell's equations" on en-wiki there is a wikidata link to the danish article "Maxwells ligninger". But there is no interwiki on this article and when I try to create a link with wikidata, there is an error. What is the fault and how can I correct it.
Kind regards Savfisk (talk) 20:03, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Savfisk: It all looks all right to me. Are you still having this problem? Try appending ?action=purge to the end of the URL of the Danish article. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 14:53, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jon. It looks fine to me also. I tried many things yesterday, but maybe it was just bug in my browser (firefox). I learnt that now. Sorry to disturb you, and thanks for your quick answer. Kind regards Savfisk (talk) 16:22, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Savfisk: No probs, glad it's ok. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 17:01, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Soccerway ID[edit]

Hi, can you make your bot check if the soccerway profile is reachable before you add the ID? It is obviously adding wrong IDs such as [1] or [2]. A short check for the HTTP status code before adding the ID would be very helpful. Thanks, Yellowcard (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Yellowcard: Well, doing it before it adds it adds a layer of complexity. I'm not saying it's not doable, but I prefer to do it like this because it hightlights problems that already exist in the templates the bot imports the values from. If we don't add them to Wikidata there will be no entry for it in the constraint violation report, and therefore no indicator that something was wrong in Wikipedia. This way we can fix it in Wikipedia as well if desired. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:23, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but PLEASE teach your bot not to re-add wrong values, see [3]. This is a minimum what should doable for you (e.g. by a database table with already processed items). What programming language is your bot written in? Yellowcard (talk) 07:48, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Yellowcard: If you just let the bot finish the run, I'll fix everything that's wrong within a few days – after all, the property is brand new and not used anywhere so far, so if they values are wrong for a little while that doesn't hurt. For this run I'm using the standard harvest_template.py script in Pywikibot. If you'd have added the right value in that item instead of just removing it, it wouldn't have added it again. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:19, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly don't understand why you wouldn't adapt the bot to make correct edits instead of letting it make wrong edits and correct it by hand. This bothers you and others. Are you able to implement changes in the code? But in the end it's up to you. Yellowcard (talk) 01:57, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Yellowcard: I understand that my method seems weird, but it has worked before (with Sports-Reference.com Olympic athlete ID (archived) (P1447), which is now as good as it gets when it comes to constraint violations). I guess I prefer to check the uncertain stuff (i.e. what violates constraints) manually to ensure (a) that we have as many values as possible (skipping violations before adding them would go against that) and (b) that the values are correct. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:14, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You may also want to add a heuristic if the soccerway ID even matches the player name in question. I reverted two of your bot's edits because the wrong soccerway ID was apparently present at en-WP articles (most likely due to c&p errors). Ceterum censeo bot runs on wikidata should be avoided. --Headlocker (talk) 14:43, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Headlocker: Well, one thing I noticed while checking this is that the URLs in Soccerway are actually just for show. As long as the ID is valid, it doesn't matter what you put between the /players/ and the ID. Case in point: This url leads to the exact same page as this url. So it's not as simple as that. If I figure out how their API works I could try and check values in Wikidata up against their API, which would be useful. As for "ceterum censeo bot runs", I have no idea what that means (yes, I googled it). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:14, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed another problem caused by your bot. It's been adding the ID twice. That makes a lot of single value constraints. Mbch331 (talk)
@Mbch331: Those have all been dealt with (unless tomorrow's constraint report will bring more). Normally the bot will avoid articles where there already is a statement, but in some cases the source template (en:Template:Soccerway) was used twice in one article, and the check for whether it was already there failed. Anyways, User:KrBot fixed most of them, and I fixed the rest (except for valid duplicates, that's another story). Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:14, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Litt hjelp[edit]

Hei. [4]. Her står det "Wikidata item not found", men her på Wikidata finnes "oppslaget". Kan du oppklare for meg? Gjør jeg noe feil? Hebue (talk) 19:57, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jeblad (talk) 19:37, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Forbokstav i label[edit]

Hei. --Wikijens (talk) 12:06, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jepp og jepp. Utenom egennavn såklart. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 12:15, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Den er grei. Takk for raskt svar. --Wikijens (talk) 12:34, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Participant of (P1344)[edit]

Hei.

Jon Harald Søby (talk) 10:35, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok.
Mvh. --Wikijens (talk) 16:22, 9 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Jon Harald; I have seen you contributing to a lot at pages linked to https://www.wikidata.org/?curid=24028442# (as for today titled Wikipedia versions but intended in general for WMF projects). I would be happy if you can review the properties of these pages, create the missing Wikibook and Wikiversity project pages, comment on user:I18n/sandbox (where you may find many usefull queries) and comment there with new / additional ideas. Best regards Gangleri also aka I18n (talk) 16:06, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@I18n: Hi Gangleri, nice to see you here. I don't mean to be negative, but on this list I see a lot of things that don't think make any sense. I see for example on Afar Wikipedia (Q8558395) that you have added ISO 639-3 code (P220), ISO 15924 alpha-4 code (P506) and script directionality (P1406). This doesn't make any sense at all. ISO 639-3 code (P220) is for languages. The Afar Wikipedia is not a language. ISO 15924 alpha-4 code (P506) and script directionality (P1406) are for scripts. The Afar Wikipedia is not a script. The only thing that should be specified of this sort in Afar Wikipedia (Q8558395) is that its language is Afar (Q27811), and the mentioned properties should be specified there, not in the element for the Afar Wikipedia. By adding those to the elements for Wikimedia projects you are creating a lot of constraint violations for all of these properties. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 17:47, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I mentioned your concerns at https://www.wikidata.org/?curid=17927576#multiscript_collaboration . Regards I18n (talk) 19:48, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
FYI: a) At https://www.wikidata.org/?curid=14546815#WMF_projects is the start of a discussion about changing the domain of the five properties having constraint violations or not. b) A second discussion started at property talk:P1406#Wikimedia_projects. c) I created Wikidata:Database reports/WMF projects. Regards I18n (talk) 20:01, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikidata:Database reports/WMF projects and property talk:P218#whats next and comment there please. I18n (talk) 10:25, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

IBU biathlete identifier[edit]

Thanks a lot! :) Marcus Cyron (talk) 20:59, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Marcus Cyron: No, thank you for putting them all in dewiki in the first place, that's by far the wiki I imported most values from, and I saw that most of the articles (e.g. the three where I randomly checked the history) were made by you. 😊 Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:26, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, until I stoped my engagement 10 months ago in writing about winter sports, I wrote 2222 biografies of biathletes at de:WP. We are also not bad in Ski jumpers, Nordic combined, Alpine skiiers and Skeletonistas. In Cross country will be no:WP a lot better than we ;) - and in Ice skaters nl:WP. Request for Property[edit]

God kveld ! Hvordan virker en slik request. Jeg tenkte å be om en for Embedte. mvh --Pmt (talk) 19:05, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
