こんにちは[edit]

@Okkn: Greetings! Thanks for inviting me to Wikidata. Everything is good so far. I like the concept of Wikidata. The only question I have right now concerns Han characters that have been simplified in Japan or mainland China. I noticed (Q54872784) has been created but its traditional/kyūjitai form has not been created yet. Should I include information about , e.g. Unicode hex codepoint, small seal script images etc. into the page for shinjitai ? KevinUp (talk) 15:02, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ようこそ! I'm glad you like Wikidata. Regarding your question, "温" and "溫" are different ideographs (and have different Unicode codepoints), so you can create a new item corresponding to "溫". (But if we store the information about "温" and "溫" in the same item, that is not a big problem.)
Wikidata is still incomplete. Currently we have no way of linking between variant sinogram (Q837611), such as "温" and "溫". To create a new property, we have to propose it here and discuss its validity. Why don't you give it a try? I would like to help you to make your first property proposal! --Okkn (talk) 16:10, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good morning. I've just created a new proposal called "CJKV variant character". Please take a look. The only issue I have is that after the value 6EAB (codepoint for "") is added to the page for "", clicking the value 6EAB should link to the Wikidata page for "" rather than the Unicode database. I'm not sure how to indicate that in my proposal. Could you help me? Thanks for encouraging me to try out my first proposal! I'm delighted to be part of Wikidata which is something new to me. Well done. In my opinion, the "data type" of this property should be "item" rather than "string". If you want to describe that the Han character (such as "温") has a variant character (such as "溫"), create a new item corresponding to the variant, which has Unicode code point (P4213) etc, and link from the subject item to it. Also, You can link from "溫" to "温". --Okkn (talk) 05:38, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiktionary links for Hangul syllables[edit]

Just a reminder that links to Wiktionary pages in the main namespace are disallowed on Wikidata. Please remove those which you have already added, whether to items about Hangul syllables or to other items, and do not add any more until that restriction is lifted, if that restriction is ever lifted someday. Mahir256 (talk) 19:30, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mahir256: Thanks for the reminder. These statements have been removed. @Okkn: I think an exception should be made for Unicode characters to be linkable to Wiktionary pages. This could be discussed by the administrators. Wiktionary contains descriptive information and users may visit it for more information. KevinUp (talk) 19:48, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Mahir256: I understand we usually don't add sitelinks to Wiktionary pages in the main namespace, because they are not concepts, but is it really not allowed to add Wiktionary sitelinks? I think WD:N just says Wiktionary sitelinks are not valid to fulfill the notability criteria, but does not say we must not add Wiktionary pages to already created items, right? When it comes to Unicode characters, including Hangul syllable (Q55809450) and sinogram (Q53764738), they are clearly notable by themselves, and they are concepts rather than representation. Or if we add sitelinks to Wiktionary pages, the function of mw:Extension:Cognate does not work...? --Okkn (talk) 01:30, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. If links to Wiktionary pages are disallowed on Wikidata, then the input box that allows users to add Wiktionary links should be removed from Wikidata. KevinUp (talk) 05:09, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The restriction only applies to Wiktionary pages in the main namespace, as I stated initially; links to categories/templates/Wiktionary: pages/etc. (except those in the citation, user, and all talk namespaces) are allowed. Mahir256 (talk) 21:15, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. This discussion has been moved to Wikidata:Project chat#Wiktionary links for Hangul syllables/Unicode characters for further discussion. KevinUp (talk) 08:20, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
