The Wikimedia Incubator is a project "where potential Wikimedia project wikis in new language versions of Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wiktionary and Wikivoyage can be arranged, written, tested and proven worthy of being hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation." The wikis which are hosted there are mostly new language versions of Wikimedia projects, which will stay there until an actively contributing community develops and, after approval by LangCom, they receive their own subdomain. To make the work on the Incubator's "test wikis" more attractive, the community there tries to facilitate contributing with extensions like Extension:Incubator. The target is to make the wikis usable "for real like any other Wikimedia project wiki". To reach this goal, Wikidata's help is needed:

Interwikis (Phase 1)[edit]

  1. The test projects on Incubator will likely become better known, simply because of interwiki links pointing to them
    • Interest in contributing to the test projects will increase, increasing its chances of being hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation
  2. The test projects themselves could benefit from the much simpler interwiki system on Wikidata
    • Messy interwiki clean-ups and Wikidata unifications after import of a test wiki to a newly created subdomain are no longer required

Data usage (Phase 2)[edit]

  1. Wikidata infobox data could be immediately used by the test project contributors, not just after the subdomain is created
    • Messy infobox cleanups after the creation of a wiki are no longer required
