Sir Alexander Morris Carr-Saunders

Director of LSE 1937-57

'A student of biology at Oxford; whilst studying Law (called to the Bar 1913) he was subwarden of Toynbee Hall. He drew on his biological studies in considering the question of resources and population and made a leading contribution to the establishment of demography. He was Charles Booth Professor of Social Science at the University of Liverpool from 1923 until 1937. His directorship of LSE covered the war years when the School was evacuated to Cambridge. He was Chairman/ Vice Chairman of the Inter-University Council for Education Overseas from 1946-1962 and was active in the establishment of university colleges in developing countries. He retired in 1957 and died in 1966.' LSE Magazine, November 1983, No66, p.18
