A Battle (Smith, Suppl. n° 172, describes this picture as follows) : A battle, exhibiting a desperate rencontre of cavalry, and aconflict between bodies of infantry, near a burning windmill andvillage adjacent to a river, which divides the country. On the bankof a stream is a soldier on a bay horse, who has just discharged hispiece at an adversary on a piebald charger, which is galloping upthe bank, and the rider is falling wounded from his seat. A little inadvance of this is a soldier in armour on a dark-grey horse, makinga back-handed cut at his enemy, wrhose horse lies wounded on theground. Bodies of combattants, partly enveloped in smoke, occupya great portion of the surrounding country. - - Painted with abroad free pencil and a clear tone of colouring. Signed with the monogram.Panel, 1 ft. 9 1/2 in. by 2 ft. 7 3/4 in. Collection of Baron Verstolke de Soelen. - 64 -

Another big trunk is standing in the ground. — A hill, risingfrom right to left; a house, surrounded with trees on the extremityof the hill. A man, standing before the house, is pointing towardssome travellers in the distance. A woman is looking out of thewindow. A pedestrian is coming near the house. On the foot of thehill is a man on horseback, with two dogs. A person, seated there,shows him the way to the house. Different travellers in the direc-tion of a distant town in the valley. Clumps of trees. Blue sky withclouds. — The figures are painted by Lingelbach. Signed and dated.Canvas 33 1/2 in. by 40 1/2 in.
