Amongst the party are ayoung lady and a portly gentleman who stands by her to consulthim in the game. On the opposite side of the table sits a merryfellow with a card in his hand; and the remaining person standsby, smoking his pipe. A youth is seen entering the room with acandle in his hand; and on the landing of a stair case above him,are two persons also with a light. A company of seven persons ison the opposite side of the apartment, one of whom is a womanopening oysters. This excellent picture appears to have been paintedin competition with the celebrated School by Gerard Dov, andlike thai great painter, Jan Steen has succesfully triumphed overthe conflicting effect of so many lights.
