VAN OSTADE (Adrian)(1610-1685) 27. — The Card players (Smith, Supplement n° in, describes the picture as follows) : « Two men and a woman in a room. One of the former, dressedin a green jacket with light sleeves, and a dark-grey cap, is seatedin a profile view on the right, holding a jug and a pipe in one hand,and a piece of money in the other : he appears to be speaking tothe woman, who sits on the opposite side, with a glass in her hand,which she rests on the table. The other man stands, leaning hiselbow on a chair, listening to his comrade. —■ Figures seen to theknees. Panel, 10 3/4 in. by 8 1/2 in. Formerly in the possession of Thomas Emmerson, Esq. Count Cornelissen ,M. Gilkines and Tardieu.Engraved by M. linger. Sold at the Chevalier de Lissingens Sale, Paris, 1876, for 28100 francs.

I. p. 25o, n° 1S4, describes this picture as follows : « An interior, with two men and a woman grouped round alittle table; the latter is singing from a music-book, which she holdswith both hands, and is accompanied by one af the former, whosits opposite to her, touching the violin with his fingers; theother man stands between them, playing on the violoncelle.
