Ce chef-d'oeuvre de l'école provençale, resté longtemps anonyme, a été rendu à Enguerrand Quarton, l'auteur du Couronnement de la Vierge peint en 1453-1454 pour la chartreuse du même lieu (Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, musée). Le donateur chanoine (à gauche du tableau) qui a la vision de la Pietà avec saint Jean l'Évangéliste et sainte Marie-Madeleine n'a pas été sûrement identifié. |
