Das Kind hat in der einen Hand einen kleinen Apfel – Anspielung auf den durch seine Geburt und späteren Opfertod überwundenen Sündenfall – und greift sich mit der anderen an die eigenen Zehen. Diese Geste wirkt sehr lebensnah. Trotz Heiligenscheins und Kreuznimbus sollen Mutter und Kind auf diese Weise möglichst natürlich wirken und dadurch die wunderbare Menschwerdung Gottes verdeutlichen.
