Il dipinto fu acquistato dal barone Mandralisca a Lipari, dove si racconta che fosse montato come sportello in un mobile da farmacia. A giudizio del Longhi non è il ritratto di un marinaio, ma piuttosto di un barone o di un uomo facoltoso. Wright, in un suo contributo del 1987, precisa che i ritratti di Antonello rispettano una tipologia omogenea: dal fondo scuro emerge di tre quarti il viso rivolto verso la luce che cade diagonalmente; essi testimoniano una risposta italiana al realismo fiammingo. |
