Often a kilometre and a half or further from the front line, dressing stations like this were one of the first places a wounded soldier could get medical care after evacuation from the battlefield. Belgian artist Alfred Bastien painted this work for the Canadian War Memorials Fund in 1918. Wounded in 1915 while serving in the Belgian Army, he had first-hand experience with battlefield injury.
