Formerly in the Collection of Lady Cranstoun ; in 1899 in the Collectionof Comte B. de Castellane ; and subsequently in that of Mr. C. J. Wertheimcr. Canvas. 50J- in. x 73 in. (1.282 x 1.854). John Dunning, the eminent lawyer, was born at Ashburton, Devon,October 18, 1731 ; was appointed Solicitor-General in 1767, but resigned in1770. In 1782 he was made Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and raisedto the peerage as first Lord Ashburton of the first creation. Married,March 31, 1780, Elizabeth Baring. He died August i8, 1783. In the centre stands a lady in a rich red dress withbrown sleeves ; her partner, dressed in blue, and wearing a red capand belt, is footing it to the strains of music made by a tambourineplayer on the extreme left and other musicians on the right.Towards the left of the composition are six brilliantly costumedladies and gallants flirting ; on the other side is another couple,similarly engaged.
