Motivation[edit]

Currently, most of our pages for college and university sports clubs/athletic programs/etc. (this concept has a bunch of names, so aliases will be important, but it's referring to the entities that encompass all sports at an institution, not individual teams for specific sports) are linked to their institution, but almost no higher education institutions have a corresponding link back to their sports program. The only existing way I could think of to do this would be to use represented by (P1875) (as far as I'm aware, no items actually do this). However, I think this would be insufficient, as that property is configured to be used for things like talent agencies representing models, and the relationship between an institution's athletics program and the institution itself is very different than the relationship between a model and an agency. A sports program doesn't just represent the university as a client; it's a component of the university and fulfills many functions unrelated to representation. Just as university infoboxes (at least on en-WP) have a field for the sports program, I think we ought to have a property for it here, so that this type of information can be easily represented. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:40, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

High school works too. Should this property be called "academic athletics program" to prevent confusion and misuse from application to other situations, like countries and cities? If there is not an obvious alternative for querying the educational sports sector then this seems like it should apply to hundreds of universities and thousands of high schools. I am especially curious about what this could turn up outside the United States, which I think has the strongest tradition of combining large-scale sports and education. @MisterSynergy, ArthurPSmith, Mahir256, Amadalvarez, Gymnicus: because you gave your opinion on this proposal that is related to this one, could you give your opinion about this new proposal? Pamputt (talk) 17:18, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
