Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:03]
This meeting will last 60 minutes
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:03]
hiiii
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:03]
During the first half of the meeting we will present the news around the development of Wikidata & Wikibase
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:03]
After that we will welcome questions and discussions!
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:04]
Before we proceed, let’s welcome new faces who joined the development team in the past quarter
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:04]
Starting with PMs
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:04]
@Jon_Amar joined as product manager responsible for the Wikibase Suite. Together with @evelien (PM for Wikibase.Cloud) they are responsible for the Wikibase product line
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:05]
@Arian_Bozorg joined the team as Junior Wikidata PM. He’ll be supporting Lydia and Manuel on the Wikidata side
[Trust and Safety] Yemifestus, [09.11.22 18:05]
Ok, i'd like to ask. Can i ask questions with voice recodings?
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:05]
Also with us today for the first time in this meeting is @valerie_wmde, who is the new communications manager for the Wikibase community
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:05]
Yours truly remains the communications manager for the Wikidata community :)
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:05]
Let’s now go into our usual business of presenting the news around the development of Wikidata & Wikibase
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:06]
After that, we will welcome questions and discussions!
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:06]
So @nightrose, what happened in the past quarter for Wikidata?
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:06]
So many thing! :D
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:07]
Ok first we put quite some ork into lexicographical data. We developed the new page for https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:NewLexeme and it is now live. We'll still have to fix a few issues but I hope it'll help more people to create Lexemes in their language now.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:07]
We also made a number of smaller improvements on the Lexeme page itself.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:08]
And last but not least we had a lovely workshop together with the team from Wikimedia Indonesia to help them further get onboarded on all things lex. data so they can help support and build out that part of Wikidata.
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:09]
[In reply to [Trust and Safety] Yemifestus]
ia there a reason you'd like to use voice? text may be better for documentation purposes
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:09]
Then we continued our work on the new REST API. It can now edit statements and do things like handle http request headers properly
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:09]
If you'd like to test it there are details here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikidata@lists.wikimedia.org/thread/26Q4RUTPFN2SWZWOEA3TXBH5MCPHLEBU/
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:10]
Any early feedback would be lovely so we can continue to build it out and make it useful for anyone building applications on top of Wikidata.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:10]
Another thing we worked on is the version 2 of the Mismatch Finder. https://mismatch-finder.toolforge.org
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:11]
You can now get a random set of mismatches from it, which should help you find things to fix in Wikidata and other places on the web.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:11]
Right now it has a lot of mismatches between Wikidata and English Wikipedia local content thanks to Mike Peel.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:12]
And we also worked on one of the things that's been requested since a very very long time: sitelinks to redirects.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:12]
So now you can link to articles on Wikipedia and co that are redirects under certain conditions.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:12]
Work on updated guidelines and help page has started. Check out the current draft here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Sitelinks_to_redirects
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:13]
And that's not all - further work has also continued on introducing the new mul language code. As a side effect of our work on the new mul language code, you helped us discover many dormant bugs around language fallback. Our next step will be to improve the user interface to support the new language code.
Hari, [09.11.22 18:14]
will all these changes be available on mediawiki 1.39 that's supposed to be released this month? Also do you guys have a date as to when mediawiki 1.39 will be officially available this month ?
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:14]
And last but not least we did a lot of technical investigating for how to move forward with making improvements to Entity Schemas so they become more useful going forward.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:14]
And with that I'm gonna hand over to Jon
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:15]
hi all ! so very nice to be here with you 😊
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:16]
As Mohammed said, I'm the new PM for Wikibase Suite. I have a lot to learn and very excited to learn from you here.
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:16]
A few updates from Suite's end:
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:16]
After putting the Wikibase Suite release a bit on hold while focusing on the Wikibase Cloud launch in the first half of the year, in the last few months we’ve been busy updating Wikibase Suite and making releases that bring it up in sync with the current Mediawiki versions.
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:17]
The latest Wikibase Suite release currently is a version compatible with Mediawiki 1.37
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:17]
We are currently preparing the Mediawiki 1.38 compatible release that will also include the experimental Federated Properties functionality which allows using both local properties and properties from other Wikibase (e.g. Wikidata) on a single instance.
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:18]
1.37 Mediawiki compatibility release notes are here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/plugins/gitiles/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/refs/heads/REL1_37/RELEASE-NOTES-1.37
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:19]
I'm going to hand over to Evelien now. :)
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:19]
Hey people, great to be here again :D I'll give you a quick update on what's going on with Wikibase.cloud
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:20]
We’re now continuously sending out invite codes, so more people can join the platform, with dashboards in place to support monitoring our performance. We can confirm everything is running smoothly and stable :) If you’re interested in joining Wikibase.cloud, please fill out the application! (https://lime.wikimedia.de/index.php/717538)
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:21]
Next to that, we're restarting and consolidating our software dependency update policy after a pause to accelerate user onboarding. This is now in progress, and we continually focus on keeping the platform updated to continue supporting the performance
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:21]
We also made some UI adjustments on the dashboard to make it easier to use, especially for new users, and introduced a limit of 6 Wikibases per Wikibase.cloud user so people have more space to experiment
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:23]
(switched from bold, my bad)
Our development team participated in a Kubernetes conference in Munich in October and presented our set up of Wikibase.cloud. We received great feedback and further food for thought!
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:24]
We very recently started work on a central contact page for cloud users to provide a better support platform for the community. Stay tuned to see it appear soon
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:24]
[In reply to Hari]
Thanks for the question Hari. We're excited about those updates as well. Currently we're fully focused on 1.38. Once we've got that out the door then we'll switch focus to 1.39. Are there some specific features that have you looking forward tot 1.39?
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:25]
And finally, a survey will be sent out to current Wikibase.cloud users and those who applied for access by the end of this week. We’re very excited to see the results to help us develop Wikibase.cloud further in the future :)
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:25]
Handing it back over to Mohammed
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:25]

Now, What’s coming next for Wikidata & Wikibase?
Hari, [09.11.22 18:32]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
according to https://m.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle, shouldn't 1.38 already have been out ? I don't have features in mind but I want to know what changes will be there in the 1.39 LTS version to use it
Valerie WMDE, [09.11.22 18:32]
[In reply to Mohammed Sadat]
oh yes!
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:32]
Over to you Lydia
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:32]
What's next for Wikidata?
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:33]
We'll put some more work into the new Special:NewLexeme page to fix remaining issues
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:33]
We'll also continue on the REST API and get it live for testing on Wikidata hopefully early next year or maybe even still late this year.
Magnus Sälgö, [09.11.22 18:33]
Any plans to make it easier to change the type of a property e.g. string to external
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:34]
We'll continue to improve the Mismatch Finder, especially making it deal better with dates.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:34]
And last but not least we'll continue working towards improving Entity Schemas.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:35]
What's next for Wikibase Suite?
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:35]
Wow. My colleagues are speedy!
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:35]
[ GIF ]
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:36]
My first focus is really to understand all of your needs better so we can work on prioritising what we tackle next. So I will be kicking off a research project in the next weeks to work on getting a better sense there.
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:38]
Until then, on the development side, we're really focused on getting caught up with Mediawiki's release cycle.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:38]
[In reply to Magnus Sälgö]
So far, no. Is it a big issue for you?
Nikki, [09.11.22 18:38]
there's a script for doing that for string to external id, isn't there?
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:39]
I'll hand it off to Evelien now :)
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:39]
[In reply to Nikki]
Yes.
Hari, [09.11.22 18:39]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
any news on this ? https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T287164
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:39]
Alright, so I'll close up with what's next for Wikibase.cloud
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:40]
We’ll continue working on improving technical reliability of the platform, and the new contact page, so we can release it soon. We’ll also focus on processing the survey results and preparing for further research and development based on the insights and learnings.
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:41]
And next to that, we’ll get started on tackling our big topic: Making ElasticSearch available for every Wikibase on cloud
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:41]
And that's all for our updates! Over to you Mohammed :)
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:42]
okay, cool. that was it from us :)
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:42]
Now, it's your turn to ask us questions :D
Andrew Zaikin, [09.11.22 18:42]
@Nightrose, do you have any updates on longer term wikidata sustainability tasks?
Like replacing the blazegraph with something more capable/supported?
Offloading "scientific articles" to the separate instance?
Peter, [09.11.22 18:42]
We have Local Media Support for Wikibase (https://professional.wiki/en/news/wikibase-local-media#). Anyone working on linking the images in Wikibase to Cantaloupe (https://cantaloupe-project.github.io/) so that they are IIIF compliant? Cantaloupe is an open-source dynamic image server for on-demand generation of derivatives of high-resolution source images.
Peter, [09.11.22 18:43]
If we would like to fund the development, who can I talk to?
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:43]
[In reply to Hari]
Not yet. Still onboarding :) Thanks for putting it on my radar. I'll take a look at this in more detail and follow back up on the ticket itself.
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:43]
[In reply to Andrew Zaikin]
The latest updates are on https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:SPARQL_query_service/WDQS_backend_update. Have you seen that? If yes, then the work on that is continuing but it's a longer progress. Is there anything specific you are interested in or more the big picture?
Andrew Zaikin, [09.11.22 18:46]
I was hoping for a roadmap or something like that :)
Ok, that was about blazegraph, but what about reducing size of wikidata instance? I've seen discussion regarding moving scientific articles to another instance. Any update on that?
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:48]
[In reply to Andrew Zaikin]
Right. That is still a discussion but it needs a lot of work, starting with making it possible for a different Wikibase to take in the data.
Valerie WMDE, [09.11.22 18:49]
[In reply to Peter]
Hey Peter, I saw your message the other day and will get back to you on this within the next days. I, myself don't have enough understanding to answer this but my colleagues do! We can continue the conversation from there, I suggest :)
Peter, [09.11.22 18:50]
👍
Valerie WMDE, [09.11.22 18:51]
[In reply to Peter]

Peter, [09.11.22 18:52]
👍
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:52]
We're approaching the end of the office hour
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 18:52]
Is there anything else on your mind you'd like to ask the team about Development?
Peter, [09.11.22 18:53]
Thanks for the updates.
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:53]
[In reply to Hari]
Correct, 1.38 Version is already out, the Wikibase release supporting this version was however delayed due to the Wikibase.cloud release. We're still catching up to 1.38, and soon more communication will go out as to when this will be available. Does that clarify your question?
Hari, [09.11.22 18:54]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
thanks! yes it does
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:54]
)
GreenReaper, [09.11.22 18:54]
Is there yet an understanding of the actual root cause of the issue with Cirrus that is causing problems for Wikibase.cloud? (No worries if you don't have that to hand, I can probably dig it up if it exists.)
Hari, [09.11.22 18:55]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
would the release for 1.39 be by this November as scheduled or is there a possibility for it to be delayed to December ?
Evelien, [09.11.22 18:56]
[In reply to GreenReaper]
Hey there, yep: the root cause is not in Cirrus, it's in our setup of ElasticSearch and how it currently scales with the addition of more Wikibases. Happy to chat about this with you in one of the user group meetups if you're interested in the details
Jon Amar, [09.11.22 18:56]
[In reply to Hari]
My understanding is that Mediawiki 1.39 isn't out yet.
Magnus Sälgö, [09.11.22 18:56]
[In reply to Lydia Pintscher]
@Nightrose I feel with more Wikibase.cloud installations the number of props created will increase a lot and I have seen this problem… the future will tell if it’s a big problem
Lydia Pintscher, [09.11.22 18:56]
[In reply to Magnus Sälgö]
Hopefully in those cases it's clearer what should be an external ID from the start. But yeah we will see.
Hari, [09.11.22 18:58]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
ok so they aren't in sync. Is there a page that you can direct me to for me to keep track of the release date ?
GreenReaper, [09.11.22 18:58]
[In reply to Jon Amar]
Correct, it is planned to be out this month in theory but I do not know if that will happen, there has been an RC. https://mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle#Versions_and_their_end-of-life
Mohammed Sadat, [09.11.22 19:01]
We're almost out of time. As you know the last few minutes is reserved for *bragging* about what you're working on. is there something you'd like to highlight? :D
GreenReaper, [09.11.22 19:03]

I think there are things to still do with Federated Properties v2 for Wikibase 1.38 that they want done before its release. Some of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wikibase_-_federated_properties/
It might be that they are not all necessary though.
