2022-07-27T16:02:41 <Mohammed Sadat> Before anything I’m excited to welcome Evelien
2022-07-27T16:02:48 <Mohammed Sadat> It’s her first time here. For those who have not met her, Evelien is the new product manager for Wikibase.Cloud
2022-07-27T16:03:02 <Evelien> Hi everyone! Great to be here
2022-07-27T16:03:16 <Mohammed Sadat> As you may know, we’re also currently hiring a new product manager to be responsible for the Wikibase Suite product line. Hopefully, they will also join us in the next office hour in October
2022-07-27T16:03:20 <GreenReaper> reply to <Evelien> "Hi everyone! Great t…" <sticker>
2022-07-27T16:03:22 <Dnshitobu> <new_chat_participant,new_chat_member,new_chat_members>
2022-07-27T16:03:41 <Mohammed Sadat> And today we’re also joined by special guests from the d:Wikidata:Wiki Mentor Africa project, @Udehben. They’ll share a bit about Wikimentor Africa and tell us how it works
2022-07-27T16:04:01 <Mohammed Sadat> We also announced that the folks from d:Wikidata:Wikidata for Education will present their Digitizing Curricula project today but due to logistical constraints they’re not be joining us this time
2022-07-27T16:04:15 <Mohammed Sadat> So after we hear from the Wikimentor Africa team we’ll go into the usual business of presenting the news around the development of Wikidata & Wikibase in the first half of the program
2022-07-27T16:04:20 <Mohammed Sadat> After that we will welcome questions and discussions!
2022-07-27T16:04:32 <Mohammed Sadat> So, Benedict, if you’re ready do you want to tell us about Wikimentor Africa :)
2022-07-27T16:04:50 <Benedict Udeh> Hello everyone, and good evening from Nigeria
2022-07-27T16:05:00 <Benedict Udeh> My name is Benedict Udeh the program coordinator of the Wiki Mentor Africa (WMA) project.
2022-07-27T16:05:22 <Dnshitobu> reply to <Evelien> "Hi everyone! Great t…" Congratulations to you 🍇
2022-07-27T16:05:30 <Benedict Udeh> Wiki Mentor Africa is a project that seeks to bring in more African developers and technicians into the wiki technical community. And this is to be achieved via mentorship.
2022-07-27T16:05:55 <Benedict Udeh> Experience technical Wikimedians who are interested in mentoring and bringing onboard new African Wikimedians sign up to be mentors on the platform and every month, the WMA community organises a 2-3day online workshop availing the participants the opportunity to see the mentors.
2022-07-27T16:06:26 <Benedict Udeh> During these events, a mentor is given the opportunity to guide or discuss with the participants on a technical interest of theirs. And on the last day of the workshop, participants who are interested in the specific tool are encouraged to reach out to the mentor for mentorship via the project's page or the telegram group.
2022-07-27T16:07:04 <Benedict Udeh> In the past 3 months, we have had 3 editions with an average participant of 55 join the training sessions. So far, over 150 participants majorly young people have joined the telegram group with 3 mentors adopting some of the participants
2022-07-27T16:07:48 <Benedict Udeh> One of our goals for joining this session and telling you about WMA today is to encourage anyone here who is experienced in building wiki tools and contributions to come onboard as a mentor
2022-07-27T16:08:36 <Benedict Udeh> We have participants who are hungry and willing to put in the work to learn. But need someone to mentor, guide and give them a little push towards the right path.
2022-07-27T16:08:56 <Benedict Udeh> This is our call to you as a Mentor. Please pick up the phone and join us. It would be a proud moment for you and promises to be fulfilling as well. Ask our current mentors😁
2022-07-27T16:09:53 <Benedict Udeh> This is our project link https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Wiki_Mentor_Africa
2022-07-27T16:10:35 <Benedict Udeh> If you have any questions or comments or even a suggestion for us, I am happy to hear from you
2022-07-27T16:10:52 <Mohammed Sadat> Thanks a lot for that Benedict
2022-07-27T16:11:07 <Mohammed Sadat> Feel free to ask Wikimentor Africa-related questions in parallel as we present the next part, and get in touch with Benedict if you want to join the project
2022-07-27T16:11:15 <Léa ~ Auregann> Thanks Benedict, and congrats to the WMA team!
2022-07-27T16:11:21 <Mohammed Sadat> Okay! Moving on to Wikidata and Wikibase. What happened around the development of Wikidata and Wikibase.Cloud over the past quarter?
2022-07-27T16:11:26 <Mohammed Sadat> Over to you Lydia and then Evelien :)
2022-07-27T16:11:32 <Lydia Pintscher> Hey everyone :)
2022-07-27T16:11:46 <Lydia Pintscher> Alright. Let's look at all the fancy things that happened around Wikidata development.
2022-07-27T16:12:03 <Lydia Pintscher> First of all we spend a lot of time on improving lexicographical data.
2022-07-27T16:12:37 <Lydia Pintscher> Many of you have been waiting for being able to access Lexeme data on Wiktionary, Wikisource and the other projects. And that is now possible. 🎊
2022-07-27T16:13:04 <Lydia Pintscher> In addition we've built a fancy new page to create Lexemes which is hopefully easier to understand and use for everyone.
2022-07-27T16:13:18 <Lydia Pintscher> You can go and give it a try at Special:NewLexemeAlpha right now.
2022-07-27T16:13:55 <Lydia Pintscher> It'll let you create new Lexemes just like with the old page but hopefully more people will now understand what Lexemes are and how to contribute correct Lexeme data.
2022-07-27T16:14:06 <Lydia Pintscher> Give it a try and let us know what you think.
2022-07-27T16:14:16 <Lydia Pintscher> We've already gotten some really helpful feedback that we'll be working on now.
2022-07-27T16:14:48 <Lydia Pintscher> But we didn't just work on lex. data. We also worked on making it easier to get to the data in Wikidata for programmers with building the new REST API.
2022-07-27T16:15:29 <Lydia Pintscher> That is making good progress and it can now get you all data of an Item and individual statements. And it let's you create new statements. More on the next steps there later.
2022-07-27T16:16:20 <Lydia Pintscher> We also made diffs a bit easier to read by introducing word-level diffs for labels, aliases, descriptions and sitelinks. That makes it easier to see what actually changed.
2022-07-27T16:17:19 <Lydia Pintscher> And we made more progress on introducing the new language code mul, for multilingual content. That'll help get rid of a lot of redundant labels hopefully in the future. You can try the current state on test.wikidata.org.
2022-07-27T16:17:44 <Lydia Pintscher> We've also gotten really good feedback on that already and will need to continue making a few more tweaks before its ready for Wikidata though.
2022-07-27T16:18:01 <Lydia Pintscher> And last but not least we've fixed a few annoying bugs.
2022-07-27T16:18:27 <Lydia Pintscher> We've fixed a few places where a label wasn't shown for redirected Items.
2022-07-27T16:18:51 <Arthur Smith> reply to <Lydia Pintscher> "We also made diffs a…" Nice, I hadn't noticed but I see it now!
2022-07-27T16:18:58 <Lydia Pintscher> And we've fixed a bug where an Item ID was shown in a selector instead of the actual label.
2022-07-27T16:19:13 <Lydia Pintscher> And with that I hand over to Evelien for Wikibase things!
2022-07-27T16:19:57 <Evelien> Thanks Lydia, and hello again!
2022-07-27T16:20:34 <Evelien> We have some pretty exciting news when it comes to Wikibase things: We recently wrapped up the migration of WBStack accounts over to Wikibase.cloud!
2022-07-27T16:21:54 <Evelien> This was our main concern the last few months, next to making sure the platform is stable and performing as it should. This means mostly our time was spent addressing issues and keeping a close eye on problems reported by users
2022-07-27T16:23:11 <Evelien> To make sure we can onboard more people in the future, and keep improving our platform, we have also spent a lot of brain power on setting up and improving our monitoring and metrics and are setting up more research capabilities to gather feedback
2022-07-27T16:23:56 <Evelien> For those who are interested in getting access to our early beta, please head over to Wikibase.cloud and sign up to our waiting list!
2022-07-27T16:24:41 <Evelien> Quick link to the early access waiting list is here: https://lime.wikimedia.de/index.php/717538
2022-07-27T16:24:47 <Evelien> That's all folks!
2022-07-27T16:25:03 <Mohammed Sadat> Now, let's have a quick overview of what happened outside of all the development things
2022-07-27T16:25:25 <Mohammed Sadat> There were no Admin RfA’s in the last quarter :(
2022-07-27T16:25:38 <Mohammed Sadat> 14 new bot requests were made though. 7 requests were approved \o/
2022-07-27T16:25:44 <Mohammed Sadat> Many thanks to the authors of these bots
2022-07-27T16:25:53 <Mohammed Sadat> A number of community events happened
2022-07-27T16:26:05 <Mohammed Sadat> We organized the second iteration of #DataQualityDays earlier July.
2022-07-27T16:26:05 <Mohammed Sadat> For 3 days, many of you participated in discussions about data quality processes, such as how we are currently identifying and fixing incorrect data on Wikidata
2022-07-27T16:26:18 <sarah ann adams> reply to <Mohammed Sadat> "There were no Admin …" RFA = "request for access"? or something different?
2022-07-27T16:26:25 <Mohammed Sadat> Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event. It was insightful and full of great discussion
2022-07-27T16:26:39 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <sarah ann adams> "RFA = "request for a…" request for adminship
2022-07-27T16:26:41 <Mohammed Sadat> The videos of the #DataQualityDays 2022 have been published. Check them out from the schedule d:Wikidata:Events/Data_Quality_Days_2022, including the documentation and action items that came out of these interesting presentations
2022-07-27T16:27:02 <Mohammed Sadat> Earlier in March we organized the #DataReuseDays. Editors, data reusers and developers got together to talk about issues so each group could hear the other’s point of view on things to improve (data quality, ontologies, technical infrastructure, etc.)
2022-07-27T16:27:17 <Mohammed Sadat> Check out a recap of the #DataReuseDays on this YouTube playlist --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx1LXCqfD60&list=PLduaHBu_3ejNaZk15ybdHNWY8z-FyunRm
2022-07-27T16:27:30 <Mohammed Sadat> The Wikimedia hackathon took place online in May, with as usual plenty of Wikidata-related projects!
2022-07-27T16:27:51 <Mohammed Sadat> Databox and how to add labels for properties were presented during workshops run at the Celtic Knot Conference. Links to slides and videos are here --> m:Celtic_Knot_Conference_2022/Online_program
2022-07-27T16:28:02 <Mohammed Sadat> Many thanks to all the people who are participating in these events, talking about Wikidata at conferences, creating videos or live stream sessions about Wikidata
2022-07-27T16:28:04 <Mohammed Sadat> You are awesome :)
2022-07-27T16:28:11 <Léa ~ Auregann> Indeed ❤️
2022-07-27T16:28:21 <Mohammed Sadat> New tools were created by the community over the past months.

2022-07-27T16:33:00 <Mohammed Sadat> d:Wikidata:Status updates
2022-07-27T16:33:12 <Mohammed Sadat> Now, What’s coming next for Wikidata & Wikibase.Cloud?
2022-07-27T16:33:16 <Mohammed Sadat> Over to you again Lydia
2022-07-27T16:33:29 <Lydia Pintscher> Good stuff!
2022-07-27T16:33:38 <Lydia Pintscher> So what's coming for Wikidata development next:
2022-07-27T16:34:13 <Lydia Pintscher> We'll address the feedback we got for the testing of the Special:NewLexemeAlpha page and then replace the current Special:NewLexeme page with it.
2022-07-27T16:34:35 <Lydia Pintscher> We'll also continue coding on the new REST API. Watch out for some testing opportunity hopefully next week.
2022-07-27T16:35:19 <Lydia Pintscher> A bit further down the line are then adressing some of the feedback we got for the Mismatch Finder so we can make it more useful for you. (Enable the gadget for it if you have not yet 😉)
2022-07-27T16:35:40 <Lydia Pintscher> And once we're done with that we'll give EntitySchemas some much deserved and needed love.
2022-07-27T16:35:46 <Jean-Fred> reply to <Mohammed Sadat> "[[d:User:Jean-Frédér…" (Also compilations and remakes :-)
2022-07-27T16:35:54 <Lydia Pintscher> How about the Wikibase side, Evelien ?
2022-07-27T16:36:12 <GreenReaper> reply to <Lydia Pintscher> "Many of you have bee…" With respect to "access" - is this via the usual modules, or Wikidata Bridge (perhaps for editing), or some other way? Wondering about the feasibility of accessing lexemes on Wikibase.cloud (or, say, a generic Wikibase), with an external wiki - or even another cloud instance?
2022-07-27T16:36:28 <Evelien> Alright, thanks again Lydia
2022-07-27T16:36:59 <Evelien> I already spoiled this a bit when describing what we’re working on: We will continue working hard on improving our monitoring and getting metrics up and running to get more insights to improve our platform. Next to that, we are setting up research to gather feedback from our users and future users, with the same goal.
2022-07-27T16:37:26 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <GreenReaper> "With respect to "acc…" It is via Lua, like the access for Item data on Wikipedia. Right now it's not possible to use Lua access to Wikidata from outside the Wikimedia projects. We have a ticket for it though. I can look it up if you want.
2022-07-27T16:37:35 <Evelien> We have also identified an issue with ElasticSearch on Wikibase.cloud, which requires in depth investigation to find a way to find out how to tackle this, so we will be spending a lot of brainpower there.
2022-07-27T16:38:04 <Evelien> And finally, to stress test the platform and the monitoring and gather even more insights, we will start onboarding people from the early access waiting list onto Wikibase.cloud!
2022-07-27T16:38:29 <Evelien> So pretty exciting plans :D
2022-07-27T16:38:43 <Mohammed Sadat> Okay, that was it from us
2022-07-27T16:38:55 <Mohammed Sadat> Do you have more questions for us? :D
2022-07-27T16:39:36 <মাহির মোরশেদ> How soon will T273627 and related tasks be returned to?
2022-07-27T16:40:29 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <মাহির মোরশেদ> "How soon will T27362…" Hmmm good question. I think this dropped off a bit. I'll have a look again. Thanks for reviving it.
2022-07-27T16:42:24 <sarah ann adams> how long does it generally take for a new language code to be added to wikidata it has been requested (e.g., T312904)?

[ not in any rush, just curious about the process ]
2022-07-27T16:43:42 <Nikki> are there any plans for making it possible to fetch things linking to an item in lua? to me the most obvious thing to do with lexemes in lua is generate a list of translations automatically but that means fetching a list of lexemes (well, senses) linking to an item
2022-07-27T16:43:46 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <sarah ann adams> "how long does it gen…" The next step there is an ok from the language committee. The ticket is on the right board so I hope that happens in the next days. Then someone needs to make a patch to actually add it.
2022-07-27T16:43:58 <Jean-Fred> Any chance for T210961 ever ?
2022-07-27T16:44:52 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <Nikki> "are there any plans …" No clear plans yet but it's pretty clear that this needs to happen, not just for Lexemes. So many things to do :(
2022-07-27T16:45:34 <মাহির মোরশেদ> reply to <Lydia Pintscher> "No clear plans yet b…" honestly just making query.wikidata.org/bigdata/ldf accessible from Scribunto would do wonders
2022-07-27T16:45:53 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <Jean-Fred> "Any chance for T2109…" So far I am fairly worried that it's not a good idea to do it to be honest. It'll complicate things quite a bit from what I am seeing so far and there will be overlap with existing ranks. Maybe we should go over it in the next bug triage hour?
2022-07-27T16:46:16 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <মাহির মোরশেদ> "honestly just making…" Yeah. And I fear give the search team a heart attack :P
2022-07-27T16:47:35 <Arthur Smith> Aside from search, does it seem like Wikidata is handling the size of the dataset ok? We're getting close to 100 million items and growth seems to be steady...
2022-07-27T16:48:25 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <Arthur Smith> "Aside from search, d…" So far yes. In my opinion our weak points are really query service and the social processes we have to deal with so many items.
2022-07-27T16:49:38 <GreenReaper> reply to <Lydia Pintscher> "It is via Lua, like …" I found https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T48556 - perhaps this is it?
2022-07-27T16:49:41 <Mohammed Sadat> Is there anything that anyone would like to highlight?
2022-07-27T16:49:59 <Lydia Pintscher> reply to <GreenReaper> "I found https://phab…" Yes exactly this one.
2022-07-27T16:51:52 <মাহির মোরশেদ> There is a tool "tfsl" I've been writing to edit lexemes from Python--think Pywikibot but more focused on Wikibase objects than Wikipedia pages--a quick overview of which is at https://gitlab.com/mahir256/tfsl/-/blob/main/overview.md, which you can look at after setting it up according to https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/source/tool-twofivesixlex/ . Please let me know if you have questions about either page!
2022-07-27T16:53:04 <Lydia Pintscher> Good stuff!
2022-07-27T16:53:12 <Lydia Pintscher> What else is everyone working on atm?
2022-07-27T16:54:52 <Lucas Werkmeister> (volunteer hat) I’m working on some new features in Wikidata Lexeme Forms – Punjabi lexemes should be created with two lemmas and form representations from the start, so I’ll be adding support for that
2022-07-27T16:57:31 <Jean-Fred> I'm working on restructuring integraality so that I can add more column types, more grouping types, and actually-somewhat-useful lexeme support (and perhaps support any wikibase)
2022-07-27T16:58:09 <Mohammed Sadat> cool 😎
2022-07-27T16:58:56 <Nikki> I've been working on gadget stuff. I mainly want to extract translations and css from the scripts but I've been fixing issues with the translation handling, making the code style more consistent and fixing other issues I come across in the process
2022-07-27T16:59:43 <GreenReaper> reply to <Lydia Pintscher> "Yes exactly this one…" Thanks. Something to think about w.r.t.
