formatter URL[edit]

@ArthurPSmith: Why did you employ the https://wikidata-externalid-url.toolforge.org/ for this property? The straightforward http://www.thepeerage.com/$1 seems to work. --99of9 (talk) 02:26, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@99of9: It must have been requested by somebody else, I assume because the Wikidata software doesn't correctly handle the '#' character in these ID's. ArthurPSmith (talk) 14:01, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ArthurPSmith: In what situations does the # mess up WD software? Was it failing to actually link the pages when http://www.thepeerage.com/$1 was the primary formatter? Do you know if there is a phabricator task? --99of9 (talk) 14:14, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@99of9: I believe it replaces the '#' and other special characters with HTML encoding, which doesn't work when you hit the server with such a URL. There are other characters for which people have to use the toolforge link similarly. There are a number of phab tasks relating to the formatter URL but I haven't particularly paid attention; it would be nice to get this fixed, but on the other hand there's probably some underlying reason for it that makes it tricky. Problem with an item not corresponding to the Peerage page[edit]

Hello,

I stumble upon Thomas Leahy (Q76189140) where the identifier is linking to the wrong person (totally different, different first name and last name). I'm not sure what happened (are the identifier not stable and perennial? and/or was there something wrong with GZWDer bot?) and what to do about it (we can't just remove the identifier as every statements on the item also comes from the Peerage, should we just delete it?).

I'm not sure how many items are in the same case (at least it's alleged father Cornelius Leahy (Q76189141), husband Margaret Ryan (Q76189137) and daughters, Catherine Imelda Leahy (Q76189142) and Stone Crabs (Q7618914), have the same problem ; but maybe it's limited to this family).

Hi @VIGNERON. Yes sometimes, persons on TP are deleted or merged in another one and the identifiers are reassigned to other people.
I will look more closely for this case. Melderick (talk) 13:56, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ok having looked more closely, it really appears that TP decided to remove these persons. This is not that weird as TP is using personal e-mails as source for many obscure persons.
I would advise to follow TP and delete items Cornelius Leahy (Q76189141), Thomas Leahy (Q76189140), Catherine Imelda Leahy (Q76189142) and Q76189144 .
As for the wife Q76189137 , it seems it was renamed to a more feminine name Margaret, and the rest of her family seems fine. Should we keep its item or re-create a new one ? From a data point of view I would advise to delete it as well (eventually re-create a new one for Margaret), but I wouldn't see anything wrong if we keep the item. Melderick (talk) 14:26, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Melderick: thanks. I'll propose these to deletion then (including the wife as repurposing is always problematic).
Is there a way to track these reassignments? and are they frequent?
Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 16:58, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON, we track them with reason for deprecated rank (P2241) = reassigned identifier value (Q72951433).
See https://w.wiki/ADMk. Melderick (talk) 17:20, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Melderick: I meant track the change inside The Peerage itself (so we can reflect it inside Wikidata).
Meanwhile, Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) find other sources for these people ; I'm concerned by the repurposing of Margaret Ryan (Q76189137) but otherwise it's good so I guess we could keep the items.
Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 09:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The info on Margaret Ryan (Q76189137) was correct, but labeled as "Thomas" at Wikidata, Thomas already had an already at Wikidata. Margaret's marriage to Walter George Strickland is The Peerage connection for the family. There originally was a linking error in the family where two men were listed as married, it looks like it was easier to just delete, and start over with them in the future. This has happened before, we asked that he not repurpose his old numbers, but he prefers the recycling method. At one time he was correcting errors in real time, but as more and more errors were pointed out, he has fallen way behind, and our list keeps growing. --RAN (talk) 17:05, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
