Keeping track of Africa-related literature

Hi, I'm working on indexing the Africa-related literature via Wikidata and was wondering whether you'd like to get involved with that. For an overview, see the Scholia profile for Africa, and for more specific examples, click on anything in there or check out other entries, e.g. Agnes Binagwaho or Zika virus. All of these are incomplete, but they illustrate what is possible, and your ideas and contributions to improving the associated workflows would be most welcome. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 17:18, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Hallo Daniel Mietchen,

I really like your initiative of keeping track of African related literature. When I got to know Scholia and your Africa initiative I started familiarizing myself to Wikicite and entered some records for two Africanists and the African Studies Centre Leiden (Q2174585)    manually, while also experimenting with different publication types. Today I entered my first small batch using Zotero and Zotkat’s export translator. I would be happy to get involgde but I also have to be honest I have not much spare time to spend on this project. But every little bit helps, right? :-)

This is my to do list right now: (1) to add all publications written by Stephen Ellis (Q27917025)   , (articles, book chapters, books), (2) to add publications published by the African Studies Centre, (3) to add publications published in Africa. For task 1 and 2 I have good quality RIS records which I will convert via Zotero. The RIS records in 3 may be incomplete, I will see what I’m going to do about that. I might also be able to regularly add recently published Africa articles of Western publishers (mainly Taylor & Francis) to Wikidata using Zotero’s feed functionality. I will focus on the humanities and social sciences.

I will keep you updated and I am also very much interested in the results of your workshop in Cape Town.

Thanks for the contributions. I became aware of your work during a revision of a subset [1] of data objects related to German colonial empire (Q329618). Vute (Q782179) is part of this corpus. @UJung:Thank you for pointing me to your interesting project. Happy to notice that your are specifically interested in Cameroon (So am I; I studied in Cameroon in 1988/89 and very much appreciated the sanitairy facilities of the Goethe-Institut ;-) This is the structure I use to describe (African) ethnic groups: instance of (P31) → ethnic group (Q41710),country (P17), description, variant names / aliases (also known as), identifiers. Example: Ejagham people (Q74333); the statements are based on ASC Leiden Thesaurus (Q52050038). Regards Walkuraxx (talk) 17:20, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much. I added instance of (P31) → ethnic group (Q41710) as one option to describe local groups. But as we know that ethnic group (Q41710) is mostly a European construct, there should be more types of instances (e.g. for super ethnic and intraethnic groups. Example: The "Truppenspiele" among the Duala people around 1904 described by Grete Ziemann) Another question is about the time. Example: The term "Ekoi" is already used by Germans during their administration. So there where present in country (P17) → Cameroon (Q1009) as well as in country (P17) → Kamerun (Q668294). Other descriptions for specific ethnic group (Q41710) may have changed after 1916. So how to deal with this? UJung (talk) 10:33, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

@UJung: Thank you for your questions and remarks. If the name of a local group changed I use the recent term as preferred term (label) and I add the former name in the alias field (also known as), see f.e Khoikhoi (Q219252). I’m not quite sure if i understand your remark on intraethnic and super ethnic groups well. If a local group belongs to a bigger entity I use subclass of (P279), see f.e. Hallo @Konrad Foerstner: I was thinking of giving a 10 min lightning talk about the African Studies Centre’s Wikicite activities (uploading and indexing titles), but I had my doubts, if this would fit in the conference programme. I had the feeling it might be too simple. I would be very much interested to talk to other participants about the ways they upload titles to Wikicite and how they index publications. Thank you very much @Spinster:. You got me on public art again ;-) I like your video’s on editing information about public art in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons based on the example of Lieven Bauwens. I didn’t know that the Van Der Krogt Statues database has its own identifier property in Wikidata (P3711). It’s marvellous that Mix and Match copies the coordinate location from the Van der Krogt Database to Wikidata. I was very much stuggeling with filling in the coordinate location before. Invitation to help train Global Open Initiative Team on Open Refine and Quickstatements

My team and I are currently working on uploading bibliographic data from University of Ghana Digital space unto Wikidata using Open Refine and Quick Statements. I came across your open refine tutorial videos which were very useful but it is very difficult to get the rest of my team to watch these videos and apply the knowledge to the data we are working on. I am planning on organising a virtual training session for my team and it would mean so much to us if you would be able to take time off your busy schedule to give us an intro into open refine and quick statements and possibly a quick demonstration using a few of our data sample.
