Merging items[edit]

Hallo NickK,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

With regards - - cycŋ - (talk) 07:49, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cycn,
I do believe that I use merge.js for all merge requests I am doing, and I don't remember doing otherwise. Probably the only case where I could use merge.js is when Ukrainian Wikipedia (the wiki I am working with) had two articles on the same topic linked to two different elements, which made merge.js relatively useless due to numerous conflicts between the fields. In all other cases I systematically used merge.js. Please tell me if you happen to find out any problems with my use of merge.js. Thanks — NickK (talk) 13:17, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

When I had proposed new property староста, you opposed, saying that it may be replaced by head of government (P6). But as I see, it can be used only for existing item of peoples. But many of heads of hromadas and village starostas are not notable to create WD items. So how can I use P6 for non-notable peoples?--Ahonc (talk) 00:13, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ahonc,
What you propose is basically "create a text-field equivalent of head of government (P6)". Which is a great idea but in which language should it be? If you put it in Ukrainian it will be unusable for any other project than Ukrainian Wikipedia just because any other Wikipedia will have to give an equivalent of this name in their own language. There is strictly no point in the statement that mayor of Kyiv (Q1899) is Кличко Віталій Володимирович as this statement will be only useful for Ukrainian Wikipedia, unlike statement mayor of Kyiv (Q1899) is Vitali Klitschko (Q31919). Thus if you want to put a text line in Ukrainian only, probably it does not have its place on Wikidata and should stay on Ukrainian Wikipedia. Migration vocabulary translation campaign[edit]

Ciao,
As you might have noticed, I'm running the "Europeana migration vocabulary" translation campaign right now - and I've included Ukranian in the statistics. It would be really helpful if you or others (Ата for example? ) could help bringing Uk to 100% for these concepts :-) The baseline is already quite high for labels at about 70% but quite low at about 20% for descriptions. Sincerely, Wittylama (talk) 12:02, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again - I just noticed all the stats for all languages drop off 100% down to 99% - it seems that you redirected Q47192123 and this has broken something... Can you redirect it in the other direction instead, or something?? Wittylama (talk) 13:53, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Wittylama: I know, I have made just replaced the Qid on the list as that seems to be the easiest solution. It's back to 100% now — NickK (talk) 14:00, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! :) Wittylama (talk) 14:04, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great, NickK resolved one conflict that bothered me most I still have some doubts that everything is ok with Q280958, Q1351807 and Q367293 (I'm not sure to what extent articles in one item can deviate in content). --Ата (talk) 14:15, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will look at these. My doubt so far is regarding labour migration (Q47191833) and migrant worker (Q15320003) as they seem way too close for me and thus are usually described in the same article in most wikis — NickK (talk) 14:29, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@NickK: For that case I would point you to the UNESCO Thesaurus identifiers - which is a respected external authority that differentiates these terms. Wittylama (talk) 18:52, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Wittylama: It's done for Ukrainian (thanks @Ата:!). I merged one more item (hope nothing is broken now) and we listed a few articles with potential problems above. Thanks — NickK (talk) 18:26, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think everything's correct with these two redirects you made (and fixed on the tracking pages). Thank you for your rapid work!! I've asked my colleagues to update their database with these two new items as well. I'm not sure what you mean by those items having 'problems' but I would suggest looking at the UNESCO (and, when applicable, AAT) thesaurus Identifiers in those items - to help disambiguate any problems. Wittylama (talk) 18:59, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah! no. We have a problem.... Because @Jon Harald Søby: made this edit which moved all the queries to sub-pages, when you made this edit to find-replace all instances of Q49993410 for Q12765670 - none of the language queries were affected. This means that all of the language-specific sub-pages are now referring to a blank, redirected, item and correspondingly all the statistics are down by 1 term (e.g. english etc. are listed as "99% complete"). Is there a way to replace all of these subpages with the new item simultaneously, or do I have to do it manually for each language - now that they're all listed on separate pages? Wittylama (talk) 19:22, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Edit! I realise now that @Jon Harald Søby: had NOT made a special subpage for each language, but a single subpage with a 'switch' function for the relevant variables! So all I needed to do was to make this edit and it fixed all the terms simultaneously! Phew! Thanks JHS - you made the system even better than I realised you had done :-) [the slight weird thing this did introduce was that the english language query now shows 'English' and 'English Comparison' columns (before I had 'French comparison'] but that's no big deal. Wittylama (talk) 19:30, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Wittylama: Regarding problems, I mean that in labour migration (Q47191833) and migrant worker (Q15320003), as well as in counter urbanization (Q280958), remittance (Q1351807) and convention (Q367293) chances are high that there is a mixture of two or more concepts. For instance, in migrant worker (Q15320003) there is a mixture of articles about migrants (e.g. en:Migrant worker, de:Wanderarbeiter) and about migration (e.g. fr:Migration de travail, no:Arbeidsvandring). However, none of these wikis has two articles (migrant and migration) or at least no one found that yet, thus they are all linked to the same item. I don't know whether splitting this item into two or keeping one of them without interwikis is the best solution. It's pretty much the same thing with other items, although at a lesser scale — NickK (talk) 10:54, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Wittylama: I made two new merges. Now migration is in labour migration (Q6013750) and migrant is in migrant worker (Q15320003), and two wikis (de and es) have separate articles on these two notions, so this looks fine for me now — NickK (talk) 17:36, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@NickK: I do not understand... you have merged the concepts for "migration" with "labour migration" and "migrant" with "migrant worker"?!?! Wittylama (talk) 18:19, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Wittylama: Oh no, on the contrary, sorry for not being clear enough. Firstly, I found two separate items with "labour migration" articles and merged them with the UNESCO item (two merges). The result is labour migration (Q6013750). Secondly, I split migrant worker (Q15320003) into two, with all "migrants" staying in migrant worker (Q15320003) and all "migrations" going to labour migration (Q6013750). That's the current state: all "migrations" are in labour migration (Q6013750) and all "migrants" are in migrant worker (Q15320003). Is this clear know? — NickK (talk) 22:11, 14 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
phew :-) I believe I understand. In short: you have disambiguated when a concept refers to an action or status, from the person/people who have that status? For example, the “exile” item in this vocabulary list refers to a person, and I created that item for this campaign, because the pre-existing item called “exile” was about the verb- the act or process. Same idea? Wittylama (talk) 00:00, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wittylama, yes, same idea :) --Ата (talk) 12:54, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Translation request[edit]

Hello.

Can you create en:List of museums in Baku in Ukrainian?

Yours sincerely, A2D2 (talk) 20:33, 1 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @A2D2: Sorry but unfortunately no, I don't have time for this right now and will not have it within the next days / weeks — NickK (talk) 11:37, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Timur Rossolov (talk) 22:13, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Timur Rossolov: ✓ DoneNickK (talk) 14:33, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Timur Rossolov (talk) 14:39, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Timur Rossolov (talk) 13:39, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Timur Rossolov (talk) 15:28, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 08:59, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
