Hi, I don't often edit items without logging in, but apparently I've been blocked for some kind of vandalism, which I don't have any idea about what I may have done wrong:

I could be wrong, but I think OP has two problems: They cannot edit without logging in; and they felt that they were being accused of doing something wrong. I don't think that an IP-block exemption would help with either of those.

Perhaps we could somehow communicate better to people affected by an IP block, especially a range block. From the message quoted above, there is no indication that:

• This is an IP block and may be directed at someone other than the person experiencing it.
• This is a range block and potentially affects many editors.
• This block does not prevent registered users from logging in and editing.

Good analysis. The question then becomes what to do about it. As I see it there are two options: 1) Make a small change to the blocking text saying that you might be hit by an indiscriminate block, or 2) Go through a lot of trouble to change how blocking messages are displayed on all wikis by making a detailed proposal on Phabricator and collectively hold our breaths.

Bovlb have made similar observations in the past, such as recognizing talk pages for IPv6 is basically utterly borken, and yet they are still a part of Mediawiki... I just noticed that every edit is done from a slightly different IP address (but very similar - same beginning and ending). Additionally some edits are done from random IPV4 addresses.

In short, blocking a single address won't help - either block a range or not block at all.

I noticed. Evidence suggests it is the same person and they have been breaking pretty much anything we have a rule against. WD:LP, UCOC harassment and intimidating behaviour, edit-warring, functionally socking. I think I'm going to borrow a page from Multichill's book and require people from that ISP to register an account to be able to edit for the next year or so.

Hey Gimnicus, First: Why do You not ask me as maintainer of the bot first before request blocking? Second: The bot remove only instance of (P31) statements if more specific values for the same property can be provided. In this case office building (Q1021645), residential building (Q11755880) and administrative building (Q2519340) instead of building (Q41176). As far as I know this concept to avoid redundancy is accepted and good practice in Wikidata. Ok, I can change the bots behaviour to deprecate statements with a reference instead of deleting them, but the example You mention is not suited: The archINFORM reference of the existing statement is from an older run of the Arch2bot ;) The data for this entry on archINFORM changed (is more specific now), so it should be correct to delete the old relating wikidata statement and create a more specific one?! If the same sources support the more specific value, that seems like a reasonable case for deleting the more general one. The general principle here is that we need vaguer claims if that's the only place we can add a specific source. This also comes up in the case of dates where some sources only give years.

@Infrastruktur: I disagree that correct claims should be deprecated simply because a more precise claim also exists. I don't believe that this is in line with Help:Ranking. The documented approach would be to use preferred instead. Bovlb (talk) 19:09, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

But since marking the new claim with preferred will cause other normal ranked claims to no longer be considered best-values, this might be difficult or impossible for a bot to reason about. In light of this would you consider marking claims with deprecated as acceptable? @Gymnicus: I agree that it is bad practice to revert changes from multiple users wholesale because you object to one small part of it. While we all wish that bots would avoid repeating reverted edits, you should know better than to get into an edit war with a bot. I also agree that, in a case like this, you should not be calling for a bot to be blocked before you have even attempted to communicate with the botop.
