Prefix search function required?[edit]

I think that it would be useful to have a prefix search for Wikidata:WikiProjects rather than have to expand the twisties. We do have {{Engine}} which could be utilised.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:39, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The prefix can be wiki :dproject

Languages[edit]

Can we create (not translate) WikiProjects in languages other than English? I checked but didn't see any. I think it may be a good idea. For example, they could deal with language specific terms and properties about certain items. Or maybe we can allow for modification during translation and not make a completely new project. This could be very useful regarding the fact that goals (and other sections) of the projects may differ in different languages. Klein Muçi (talk) 05:22, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We can create wikiproject in many languages .I will try creating in Xitsonga Hlachwayo Navelo (talk) 20:04, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Complete List of Wikidata:Wikiprojects[edit]

Hi -- does anyone know if there is a complete list of Wikidata:WikiProjects somewhere? I would love to see a list of all of the collapsed links on the projects page. I noticed this Wikidata:WikiProjects List, but the property associated with that query doesn't seem to exist anymore. If there is a different one that we're using now, I'd love to know that too. Thanks! Will (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:33, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Will (Wiki Ed): You can maybe try
# Q21025364 : WikiProject
SELECT ?item ?itemLabel ?aboutName WHERE {
  ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q21025364.
  ?article schema:about ?item ; schema:isPartOf <https://www.wikidata.org/> ;  schema:name ?aboutName .
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". }
}
Try it!
- not ideal though - I would also like a better way. Iwan.Aucamp (talk) 17:46, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sharing Wikiprojects[edit]

Do you just wait until a person finds your wikiproject, or do you try to share it? CanadianOtaku Talk Page 01:08, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend sharing it with a few users that are active in the area relevant to the project, to get some initial set of participants. Also adding proper categories helps others to find it. Mtrognitz (talk) 10:15, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate categories of Wikiprojects[edit]

Some Wikiproject categories have a Category:Wikidata:WikiProject XXXX prefix while the standard format followed by other WikiProjects is Category:WikiProject XXXX. Fix it? Vis M (talk) 04:49, 7 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Introduce a new category?[edit]

What is the correct way to introduce a new category for WikiProjects? I would like to introduce the category Archaeology (which should then be a subcategory of History and Cultural) to help in tying together several projects that fall under this category. Can anyone help, please? Mtrognitz (talk) 10:12, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mtrognitz, I just created it. Please go ahead and sort in the fitting projects. Thanks a lot! - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 16:05, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding birth time to persons[edit]

I am building a database of famous persons with their birth place, dates and times - https://opengauquelin.org and I'd like to merge it to wikidata. Is it possible to import opengauquelin in wikidata, and use wikidata to correct birth dates and times ? Can I create a new project for that ?

Description: opengauquelin contains data used to perform statistical tests on astrology, between 1955 and 1996. The purpose is to build a reliable and verifiable timed database. The initial motivation is to permit a reproduction of these statistical tests, but timed data can probably be used for other purposes, like demography studies. How do we exactly define a "WikiProject"?[edit]

I'm wondering why do we have two different definitions of this same item?

- here we say it's a group of contributors...

- here, it's a group of wikis Full Stack Dev & CS Teacher (talk) 08:48, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's a group on a wiki, rather than a group of wikis. There's more information on the WikiProject Wikipedia article. --Yirba (talk) 08:44, 6 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Relevancy of an idea of project[edit]

It made some time I want to make a mad of dragon depiction on Wikidata. I finally went around creating a simple interface that list things that depict a dragon (or fictional dragon. Or something which have for nature an entry that is one of those or a subclass) with coordinates for location. The problem is that, while there are already around 50 such entry on Wikidata, I’m not sure there are others who are or will be interested in this project. Is it still a good idea to create one? Marius851000 (talk) 07:32, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marius851000, nice, thanks for working on this subject! I think this could be at least a taskforce, e.g. as part of the Wikidata:WikiProject_Fictional_universes (the dragon is somehow part of both myth and fiction/pop culture but I think it fits there). You could create an own subpage (e.g. Wikidata:WikiProject_Fictional_universes/dragons) and you could link it to the main page (I just created the section Wikidata:WikiProject_Fictional_universes#Task_forces_about_specific_entities). Maybe you will find other people working on this project, or we could use this taskforce to collect all smaller projects with a focus on dragons (there may be a project with a focus on timelines, for example). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 11:36, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How do you model that a certain element of a building (e.g. a statue) depicts a dragon? I just added it to Dragon House (Q573676) using Dragon House (Q573676)has part(s) of the class (P2670)statue (Q179700)depicts (P180)dragon (Q7559). But this will probably not show in your query, or does it? - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 11:47, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t. It’ll only display element that directly depict it (but I will improve the query to show it, it’s just that I have a jam that start tomorrw and will be quite busy for the month). A WIP version is at https://dragons.mariusdavid.fr (and the query is embedded into the javascript file at https://dragons.mariusdavid.fr/code.js ) Marius851000 (talk) 09:57, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that suggestion. A task force indeed seems to be appropriate (althought maybe there could be a more appropriate project. Maybe one specific to art, as after all it’s about not really about fictional universe, but more about real-world depiction of dragons, which are also often present in legends (thought I’m more interested in more recent depiction of them, and not yet another Saint George) ). I’ll do more looking around, and probably create a page later this month. Marius851000 (talk) 10:06, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency in tagging WikiProjects via P5008 and/ or P6104[edit]

The current practices of associating individual pages with WikiProjects are inconsistent across (and sometimes within WikiProjects). For instance, WikiProject Badminton (Q15139693) maintains WikiProject Badminton/tournament focus list (Q66098665) and exclusively uses on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) (with value Q66098665, i.e. pointing to the list) for such tagging, Project Riksdagen's documents (Q114364300) does not maintain such a list and uses exclusively maintained by WikiProject (P6104), whereas other WikiProjects are less consistent, e.g. using P5008 in the absence of an actual focus list or using both properties in some combination in a way that may or may not be following some principles. To complicate things further, there is some overlap in usage with catalog (P972) and has list (P2354). We should probably strive for more consistency here and perhaps refine the associated property constraints. A simple way to get an overview of the current state of a given WikiProject in this regard is to navigate to its Scholia profile, e.g. toolforge:scholia/wikiproject/Q4099686 for WikiProject Medicine (Q4099686). Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:24, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I did not know that on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) should (or could) be used with a dedicated focus list: the examples in the property proposal and the property page, and the constraints suggest otherwise (value-type constraint: WikiProject). To me it seemed that both properties could be merged, but it did not bother me. I tend to use on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) for areas that could use some work and maintained by WikiProject (P6104) simply to indicate the project reponsible for this item/property. Your suggestion to limit the use of on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) to focus lists seems promising to me. I will link this discussion to the property talk pages for more visibility. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 12:45, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Related to this, I've seen some folks add a flood of on focus list of Wikimedia project (P5008) statements for what is simply being part of a WikiProject, which seems like a non-ideal use of that. A diff example: [1]. - Fuzheado (talk) 14:33, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

assistance requested[edit]

at WD:Local Contexts I'd like to make a little 'card' for each LC label for better presentation (sadly, no icons available due to Local Contexts system (Q124758207)Wikimedia VRTS ticket number (P6305)#2024032910006194). Does someone know about stylesheets for wiki that could help me wrangle {{Main Page/Frame}} into a nice arrangement? Arlo Barnes (talk) 21:48, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The list of this projects is from human perspective and not queried. For now we still need people to answer some such things! Bluerasberry (talk) 16:59, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
