waiting for Number datatype[edit]

On this page, there are a lot of requests with

Approved for creation; waiting for Number datatype

What does that mean?

Best regards, --MartinThoma (talk) 09:49, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It does mean the proposed property can not be created, because it needs a certain datatype, that is not avaliable yet. The programmers need to do some programming to implement the datatype. It just makes no sense to discuss the proposal as long as the required datatype is not available.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 12:14, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How will the 'Number' datatype be different from the 'Quantity' datatype? For example, the 'mass' property would be adequately described by an "amount, unit, upper bound and lower bound", as the Quantity datatype seems to have. Am I making a mistake?--Noahdsmith (talk) 14:06, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If I understood it correctly, with the new datatype the information can be in tons, gramms, pound or any other unit, and can be displayed in any of those. I've seen a page explaining this pretty good, but unfortunatly the search feature on wikidata sucks for meta-pages… --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 18:06, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Are you referring to this page? I see that here, 'quantities with units' is described as 'in progress', though in the task basic support for units in the Quantity datatype seems to be completed. --Noahdsmith (talk) 14:19, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
