Can I have some clarification about logos? It would seem that adding statements about logos are important, but Wikimedia Commons only permits the uploading of logos that have CC licenses, expired copyrights, etc., whereas the English (and other) Wikipedias allows for fair use. How should editors incorporate logos into Wikidata? Is it best to omit them where they are under copyright, or have I missed a mechanism for fair use within this system? thanks! @Dma132: this is the wrong page to discuss such questions. Please re-post your comment at Wikidata:Project chat to ask for community input. Thanks, —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:10, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Use of, and linking to, copyrighted material?[edit]

Please see this discussion for a question about Wikidata's policy on the use of, and linking to, copyrighted material. I was unable to find such a policy listed here. Jonesey95 (talk) 15:51, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is the difference between a policy and a guideline?[edit]

If you look at the templates we use to indicate each, they are described very similarly:

WD:N which uses {{Policy}} even says: "Note that the guidelines below are intentionally left a bit vague." (emphasis mine)

While {{Guideline}} does mention "occasional exceptions", I think policies do have occasional exceptions as well ... so is there any concrete clearly defined difference? (and reason why we should not merge these two concepts?)

I oppose merging them because it is useful, as an editor, to know the level of consensus and stability of a particular rule. — The Erinaceous One 🦔 21:57, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Right, so if a policy is supposed to have a higher level of consensus than a guideline ... is this level difference in any way quantified? E.g. if I propose a new policy via an RFC how much more consensus do I need than when I propose a new guideline? How is that measured? To be honest I find it really baffling that we have no policy on policies that describes such things and the RFC process ... --Push-f (talk) 22:01, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Push-f have you read en:Wikipedia:Policies_and_guidelines#Role and Commons:Commons:Policies_and_guidelines Estopedist1 (talk) 05:35, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No I haven't ... thanks for linking these :)
en:Wikipedia:The difference between policies, guidelines and essays:

The difference between policies, guidelines, and essays on Wikipedia is obscure. There is no bright line between what the community chooses to call a "policy" or a "guideline" or an "essay" or an "information page".

Ah, ok ... I guess that also is the case for Wikidata (at least for policies and guidelines). --Push-f (talk) 05:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
