Under-represented languages

There are many different ways to define this. We don't have a specific definition in mind and are keeping it purposefully open. But broadly, languages that do not have a similar amount of resources available in and for their language, e.g. in form of access to knowledge, corpora and natural language processing tools for that language, etc. Wikipedia and Wiktionary language editions that do not achieve the coverage we would expect from an encyclopedia or dictionary. Common Glossary for Wiki Communities

Thank you for your approach to defining the term "under-represented Wikipedia/Wiktionary language".
a) As we apply this term in various contexts and communities, it would be helpful to achieve a common understanding.
b) As for me as a translator I would very much appreciate the possibility to look up or propose standard translations.

@Wolfdietmann, GrounderUK: Hi both. My apologies for the length and density of this reply! It's complicated. In reverse-order:

b) Generally: Yes, I believe that m:Glossary page is the most central and broad-in-scope, but there are many related pages listed at Q1389361 (the primary "Project:Glossary" pages at each wiki). There are also topic-specific glossaries, a few of which are linked at the bottom of that meta-wiki page (but it isn't comprehensive; for example I only just now added m:Abstract Wikipedia/Glossary), and other definitions are undoubtedly written in specific pages elsewhere. There are also additional complexities for: Definitions that vary depending on the context or wiki they are used in (e.g. w:de:WP:VP versus w:en:WP:VP); and Historical definitions that were used at one time but have since been tweaked/changed/replaced/deprecated.

There have been some discussions related to making better listings (in particular to help translators) at phab:T150263, phab:T52092, and other tasks linked from those.

a) Specifically, I found one broad definition at m:Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Recommendations/Glossary#Underrepresented. If we do use the related "proposed language requirement", we would probably want to use that base-definition, plus perhaps some of the quantitative data from m:List of Wikipedias by speakers per article (whilst keeping in mind that specific data is both incomplete and potentially misleading/oversimplified) and quantitative data from elsewhere (? suggestions welcome), plus the details in the "Under-represented languages" section above this. However, I'll emphasize that at this point we're primarily interested in finding possible options, and it would be better to have too many interested and partially-suitable communities than too few!

How much involvement is required

This was asked on wikidata@ mailing list. Questions and Answer are copied and refactored here, for others' interest.

Can you estimate how much involvement (time / effort / energy ...) is supposed from the language community that will be selected for focus? The description says about "particularly active feedback channels" but different lang communities can interpret it differently :)

E.g. can you compare it to situation for first languages that have received ContentTranslation?

As you note, this would have to vary/scale depending on the community. Essentially, this means a few editors are willing to spend some time each week with tasks such as: testing out new features, discussing potential-improvements or bugs with those features, discussing/explaining/reading any related topics with the rest of their local language community, helping to improve the central documentation, and of course contributing content to Lexemes and Wikifunctions. The intensity of these tasks would vary over time, depending on where the projects are in their development cycle. A main task would be the communication with the wider community in the given language - and it is hard to predict how much time that would take.

CX was started way back in 2014, so that is complicated to compare it to, but based on my fuzzy memory that is probably a good comparison.

Please we need help

Hello please my community would like to start learning how to start creating and adding lexemes in Igbo Language and we need support in the following areas:

• to encourage/help more volunteers to add content into the Lexeme namespace. I would like to request support for Wikidata Lexeme Forms for Igbo at Wikidata Lexeme Forms#Language support. I don't know where to start.
• a capacity building support to assist with translating the more stable parts of the Lexeme and Wikidata documentation pages
• to create Igbo language subpage(s) at Lexicographical data/Documentation/Languages
