Becoming a Mentee[edit]

The WMA program is open to all African users/editors who are interested in creating/contributing to a Wikidata tool. Participants are expected to have some basic programing experience. Becoming a mentee is easy; simply follow any of this methods:

Find your own Mentor: Look at our list of Mentors who are actively available to take on new participants. This list has information about their interests, abilities, tools they are involved in, and any restrictions they may have, so if you find one you like, contact them on their talk page and ask to be mentored.

Join by Project (recommended method): Go through the list of Wikidata tools offering mentorship. You can do this by clicking here and if you wish to be part of any of the projects, check the author's name(s) to find mentors that are currently working on that project/tool and contact anyone you like on their talk page and ask to be mentored.

If you've been adopted and you don't think that your Mentor is a good fit for you, just let them know and then follow this process again to get a new Mentor. Mentors recognise that sometimes they aren't the right person to help, and won't be offended if you tell them you're looking for another Mentor.

If you are having problems with your Mentor that you feel you can't discuss with them, please leave a message on the main Wiki Mentor Africa talk page and other editors will do what they can to help you.

What it's all about[edit]

WMA is...

  • ...A single point of contact (w:Mentorship), where the Mentor gives guidance, answers questions and offers friendly advice and support.
  • ...For help with technical difficulties, policy interpretation and conflict management.

WMA is not...

  • ...Forever. Once experienced, a Mentee will be able to "graduate", though some stay in touch with their Mentors for years afterwards.
  • ...A social club. Though fun, WMA is only here to help African users improve and use Wikidata Tools.
  • ...Just for the newest of users. It's also for those who have been editing a while, but have limited experience, and now want to expand their involvement.
  • ...A shield. Mentees remain solely responsible for their behaviour.

Resources and Help[edit]

For a list of useful resources to help you get started on contributing to Wikidata, see the Mentee's resources page - feel free to add anything, in or out of Wikidata, that you think other new users will find helpful.
