Best practices[edit]
Modeling series[edit]
Comic books are often published in a series based around a specific character or team. Individual sub-series with a specific creative team may exist within the larger series. In this case, a Wikidata item should be created for the series, the sub-series, as well as any volumes in the series or sub-series. This should be modeled in the following hierarchy:
- Series (example: Iron Man (Q56273856))
- Sub-series (example: Tales of Suspense (Q782363))
- Volume (example: Marvel Masterworks: Iron Man Volume 1, a reprint of Tales of Suspense #39-50 in a single volume)
- Issue (Tales of Suspense #39)
- Volume (example: Marvel Masterworks: Iron Man Volume 1, a reprint of Tales of Suspense #39-50 in a single volume)
- Sub-series (example: Tales of Suspense (Q782363))
follows (P155)/followed by (P156) should be used for connecting volumes within series and issues within volumes and series.
Renumbering[edit]
When a series has been re-numbered, this is usually to distinguish part of a series for marketing purposes, the series ordinal (P1545) property should have two values: one for the number in the series being distinguished (the preferred value), and the second for its number in the overall series. This ensures that series remain connected.
Modeling characters[edit]
It is preferable to connect characters to a work using characters (P674) statements on the work itself rather than using present in work (P1441) on the item for the character. For popular comics characters, listing all the works in which they are present quickly becomes unwieldy.
