Wikidata is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation: a free, collaborative, multilingual, repository of structured data that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike.
Wikidata will endeavour to support and structure the knowledge stored in its sister projects, provide data in all of the languages of the Wikimedia projects, and enable central access to the data in a way similar to what Wikimedia Commons allows for multimedia files.
As documented elsewhere, the initial development of Wikidata has followed a three-phase approach:
- The first phase (sitelinks aka interwiki links) will create a centralized knowledge base for all the Wikimedia projects. This will provide an alternative to the current interlanguage link system
- The second phase will provide sister projects with access to Wikidata (for example, infobox-related data), with the explicit goal of augmenting, extending, or replacing widely-used content on Wikimedia projects with data
- The third phase (queries) will further expand access to Wikidata, and will provide ways of exploiting this data within and outside the Wikimedia projects

Future Use Cases[edit]
The three phases of development are just the beginning; Wikidata provides endless possibilities and opportunities for support of sister projects.
For the time being, on-Wikidata sister project portals should be used mainly for more immediate planning of Wikidata integration during the three phases (however, contemplation and proposal of other ways Wikidata can support sister projects is also encouraged).
