As already stated on Wikidata:Data collaborators#User:DrTrigonBot I would like to run the SubsterBot part directly here on WikiData instead of spread over several Wikipedia languages as it is now the situation.   • Withdraw? According to Jeblad on Wikidata:Project chat#Configuration templates (e.g. bot templates) it looks like I have to withdraw this bot request and switch off this bot completely because of wikidata... Is that correct? (on one hand a pitty because I liked this bot and felt it was quite successfull, but on the other hand a good thing since now we have this functionality directly in wikidata) Can anyone confirm that? --DrTrigon (talk) 08:57, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

      • Consider you have e.g. currency exchange rates, sports player rankings or any other kind of information that changes frequently and thus has to be updated from an external source in a regular time interval. That's exactly what the bot does. You can specify any external source like url or email address, then the bot retrieves this data (several formats like plain text, csv, odf, xlsx, xml, zipped or not, ...), processes it and updates the target wiki(data) page. The whole configuration for this can be done from wiki by using a dedicated template. Further information are provided in on the pages already linked above.           • I won't be voting on this, as I intend on closing it (no one else closes these things, it seems), but I would like to make sure that this gets a test run before being approved, and it's going to be a while before Phase 2 is even up.             • Very well! :) I think it's important to convince you, even more since you are the one usually closing these requests (even though I generally try to convince everybody ;). I am aware that Phase 2 is not up yet, but especially on wikidata-test-repo there is already lot of the API my bot needs. Honestly I do not know how long it will be until Phase 2, but I try to be up-to-date with my bot. In fact - as you can see from the (first) test link above - the bot is now ready to work with and on wikidata, the open question to me right now is how templates in future will request data from wikidata and along with this how the data should be stored and what functions wikidata will provide for that in future. Right know it looks quite preliminary (of course) and should in future at least get some dictionary (key-value pair) style data format for claims/statements.               • Okay, I'm confused again. When you say "bot is now ready to work with and on wikidata" are you saying that there are edits that the bot can do now? If so, we don't have to wait for phase 2, you can run a local test run on Wikidata (250-500 edits). Sorry about all of this. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:38, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
                • That's okay! ;) In fact I am confused too, fact is; wikidata API and wikidata-test-repo API are not the same. wikidata-test-repo looks more recent and is more Phase 2 in the sense that it has functions like 'wbsetclaimvalue' and 'wbcreateclaim' which look newer and apropriate (at least for the moment) for my bot. That's the reason why I setup the bot on 1 wikidata-test-repo item/page test:Talk:Q356 in order to do test edits there. More items can be easily setup by anybody.   • Hello to all and thanks for all your interest! Sorr for the long delay - since I am busy at the moment I'll try to focus my wiki activities to this topic for the next time... ;) As all my test edits on wikidata-test got lost during the last reset, I started now to edit here (Special:Contributions/DrTrigonBot). But Sven is completely right and unfortunately not all functions needed in order to set properties with simple quantities (as claims/statement) are supported yet! I setup a first configuration page (User:DrTrigon/Sandbox) and put an alias DrTrigonBot:CHF in order to link to item Q25344, as you can see there. Now the bot should set the value there but I do not know how to do this right now - thus I put an output log to User talk:DrTrigon/Sandbox. The configuration page format is lent from dewiki (and others) where the bot is running already. It might thus look strange and is not fixed yet - mainly also because it is not clear where to put those config pages.
So the open question to me at the moment are:
  1. how to add/edit simple values/quantities (e.g. numbers and strings) by bot/api on items?
  2. where to store the configuration pages?
  3. how to update thousands of such values efficiently? (minor priority at the moment)

  • So seriously... do I understand this right - after asking yet again, I do not get any answer at all...?!??! So the consensus is; all my attempts to works this out are completely ignored - but the result of all the effort I put into this on my own are not satisfactory... very nice! I can live without bot flag - if you all insist in updating such stuff on wikidata manually do what ever you want! But please keep in mind; wikipedia is updated automatically and therefore wikidata will be useless and not needed at all in such cases... your decision!
