I have two projects that envision using Wikidata to create local directors for the w:Kansas City metropolitan area of

A community organization directory (the second of these projects) exists but has not been updated since 2018.

Each of these projects seems to require two things:

  • Understanding what properties to use and how to use them for these purposes. For that I either need to know how to use existing properties or how to create new properties to be used for these purposes.
  • Write the actually queries.

If I can understand how to structure the relevant Wikidata items, I can organize edit-a-thons to involve local people in getting the data into Wikidata.

And once some of the data are in Wikidata, I can get help as needed from "Wikidata:Request a query" to write the queries. Of course, if I have success creating directories for the KC Metro area for news and for organization, that technology can then be used elsewhere to make it easier for people to (a) get news and (b) connect with organizations they want. Of course I'd also want to know how to specialize this further to get certain categories of news outlets and types of organizations, etc., so other people elsewhere could produce crudely similar databases for other purposes.
