Motivation[edit]

Many internet service items often conflate the company, service, and the website (for example Facebook (Q355)). Establishing dedicated items for websites that could list their start time, technology used, available in what countries, languages, etc. along with this property would be extremely useful. @Esquilo The data type accepts an item rather than a string. There aren't any examples yet because I haven't found or created items that represent the website of another entity yet. The proposal is kind of in a draft state right now. Lectrician1 (talk) 19:04, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The proposal makes a bit more sense now, but nevertheless I think it is missing the target. An object about a website that does not contain any other properties than instance of (P31) => website (Q35127) and a URL is not very usefull. If it instead was named someting like "offers webbased service" it would make more sense. Then it can be used one level up in the structure like National Library of Sweden (Q953058) => LIBRIS (Q1798125) and Wikimedia Foundation (Q180) => Wikimedia Commons (Q565). /ℇsquilo 14:59, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The true intention of this property is to relate the electronic service to the web server (website) it accessible from. Likewise, official app (P4290) is supposed to relate the service to the mobile app it is accessible from.

National Library of Sweden (Q953058) is the organization that owns the service LIBRIS (Q1798125). This is just like how Twitter, Inc. (Q1390577) owns Twitter (Q918). It currently uses owned by (P127) which I think is appropriate for this relationship.

Wikimedia Commons (Q565) is accessible from a website at the moment, but it could be from a mobile app in the future. Therefore, it is appropriate to make a separate website item and have a relationship between it and Wikimedia Commons (Q565). Lectrician1 (talk) 18:03, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Germartin1 The website item really just represents the website that is hosted on a web server. If the domain changes then you just change the access point to the server, the URL (P2699) statement. The item's label just called the website's domain name for ease of recognition. Like I could rename YouTube website (Q110227693) to "youtube website" if you want.

@Jura1 Users can still use official website (P856) if they want to and all of it's use will remain without issue. They can use it on the same item as "website" if they want to. This property just gives the option to users to describe data about a notable website if they want to. They don't have to and we don't have to create items for every website. Oppose This seems like a solution looking for a problem. I don't see any evidence here that anyone else has an issue with the current model and wants and is willing to maintain separate items for websites. The examples you've given have all been created by you and don't even meet the notability policy in their current state - they have no sitelinks, no backlinks, no identifiers and no references. As for stating the languages available and start time, we already have a long-established practice of using language of work or name (P407) and start time (P580) as qualifiers on URLs. - Nikki (talk) 19:26, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The website item can also link back to the organization with properties such as publisher (P123) and operator (P137) and maintained by (P126) and creator (P170).
