Motivation[edit]

Artist files are: Collections of small-sized documents relating to the visual arts that are collected and arranged for the purposes of research. Often, these materials fail to receive individual full-level cataloging, and therefore are not found in libraries finding aids, nor are they considered “archival”. See ARLIS Artist Files Group for additional information.

We are adding artists and photographers to Wikidata, many of which have valuable research material found in libraries and archives that cannot be individually cataloged, known as Artist Files or Vertical Files. Wikidata has items for each of the above as artist files Q84851343 & vertical file Q60730271. Currently there is no way to connect the artists to these research collections, which would be useful for GLAM institutions to know who has research material of this artist and could be expert on the artist’s work, or has heirs/copyright holder information, and for individual scholars, etc. - Aceven (talk) 14:50, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
