Motivation[edit]

AskArt.com, in existence since 2000, has biographical information, selected works, links to auctions, etc., covering "close to 300,000 artists" with an international scope. www.askart.com has over 1000 external links from English Wikipedia, 500+ from Commons, 100+ from Wikidata, 300+ from Russian Wikipedia, 200+ from German Wikipedia, etc. Coverage varies per artist, but I find it especially useful for lesser-known artists, with biographies sourced from encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, or contributed by named researchers with references, notes, etc. (subscription is required to access all features, but biographies are free to read every Friday).
