paintings[edit]

  1. See Notability on Wikidata. Paintings considered non-notable on Wikipedia may be notable on Wikidata. Notability on Wikidata has no bearing on notability for other Wikimedia projects, though of course there is lots of overlap. Examples are important paintings that are now included on Wiipedia pages for people or places they depict. The Wikipedia language version may not allow two separate pages for the depicted and the painting itself. That is not a problem on Wikidata.
  2. What is a painting? Many museums call watercolour or gouache paintings "drawings" and they store them the same way. These are less likely to be on display as oil paintings. For Wikimedia projects, coloured paintings are often preferred for illustrations and without metadata we can only guess what they are made of. This is where the metadata becomes important for creating an item. If you know a painting exists, but all you have is a common colour lithograph of it, can youu make an item for that painting? Yes! Who knows, the original may be lost. Just gather all the iterations together and dump them in a Commons category and link the category with an illustration to a painting item (if necessary keep material used=blank or unknown)
  3. If the museum calls it a drawing, do I use instance of (P31) = painting or drawing? If it's obviously painted, then please use painting. To be tracked by the WD:SOAP project, make sure it's a painting (Q3305213).
  4. What about copyright? Well copyright is a cutoff date for image (P18) because it is very important on Commons, but it is not a problem for Wikidata! We can add all the other statements besides the P18. See paintings by Pablo Picasso (Q5593) for examples.
  5. authority file (Q36524) for paintings of India does not really exist. There are lots and lots of art historians throughout the world who started to document various aspects of paintings of India however, so an important contribution is to add items for catalogs of art of India and link them to their art historians. Obviouusly, a Wikipedian will not write about something they don't know exists. By adding the works of art historians and linking them to concepts on Wikidata, it improves discoverability, both for paintings of the past British colonial period and of India today.

creator[edit]

The term for a painter on a painting item is creator (P170). If the painting depicts the painter, it is a self-portrait (Q192110). There are very few self-portraits of painters from India, because portraiture was traditionally not a strong part of painting tradition there.

  1. Add creator (P170) to items for paintings by different artists:
    1. Amrita Sher-Gil (9) - Find paintings and add creator (P170) Amrita Sher-Gil (Q150312)

painting genres[edit]

image (P18) for N. Gopala Rao (Q6963322). Is it a self-portrait (Q192110)?

The genre is often obvious and sometimes it is stated in collection metadata. Often it is listed along with format information for round or rectangular framed paintings. The genre is not the format. Here is a selection of popular genres. Paintings depicting daily life are confusingly called "genre paintings".

  1. still life = still life (Q170571)
  2. portrait = portrait (Q134307)
  3. Self-portrait = self-portrait (Q192110)
  4. flower bouquet = floral painting (Q12303833)

painters of India[edit]

Self Portrait (7) (Q30224559) by Amrita Sher-Gil (Q150312)

Painters of India could be from anywhere in the world, including India. Many early portraits and landscapes were painted by British explorers, and various Western collections in have included such paintings under an "Asian art" category, while these paintings are decidedly painted in the Western art tradition. On Wikidata, all of these can be created and treated the same, no matter what the metadata reflects.

  1. Add occupation (P106) painter (Q1028181)
    1. Indian painters (362)
    2. British Indian painters (237)

location of creation[edit]

Vishnu (Q100264346) was in use on various Wiipedia projects and twice on Wikidata. Now it has its own Qid and this has been added to the Commons file. Click on item history and file history to see edits
  1. India (1199) Replace location of creation (P1071) India (Q668) to village or towns or cities or kingdoms or states, whichever seems fit. Pin-point to the lowest possible location as far as possible.

Commons structured data[edit]

  1. Add structured data to Wikidata from Commons (if the file has a Qid)
    • Note: If you already know that the Commons file is from a collection previously mass uploaded to Wikidata, then search for its Qid and add the image to the item (if it lacks an image) and add the Qid to the Commons file using the artwork template and "|wikidata=Qid"
  1. Add structured data to Commons from Wikidata (if the item has a image (P18))

Wikidata items from Commons images[edit]

Sugriva Sends Hanuman to Find Sita (Q100267941) uploaded from the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Q510324) to Commons and an item created after seeing it illustrated in my museum guide (from 1995)
  1. Create an item from a Commons image in use on a Wikipedia project. Tip: go to a Wikipedia page illustrated with an Indian painting and click through on the painting to go to the Commons file and scroll to the bottom to see all the non-Commons wikimedia projects it is used on. If it is already used on Wikidata, is it used as an illustration or is it the subject of the item? If it doesn't have its own item yet, then it is a candidate for creation because you can link it back to the item for the original article. This specific case is very common for portraits of people who have their portrait as an illustration of their Wikipedia biography page.
  2. Check the file does not already have a Qid by searching it's collection or creator on Wikidata
  3. Find the metadata for the file from the Wikipedia article using it, or its collection (generally linked in the Commons file)
  4. Create the item by hand, filling in label & description, and adding statements for collection (P195), creator (P170), and image (P18). Alternatively, using Quick statements
  5. Add depicts (P180) statements to the item
  6. Add owned by (P127) statements to the item if previous owners than the current collection are known (generally the last owner is in the collection credit line)
  7. Add material used (oil paint or gouache) and measurements if known
  8. Add inception with precision or circa/earliest/latest
  9. Add genre, movement, main subject

    2. British Indian painters (22)
  2. Look out for paintings created by female painters
