Descriptions

Hello, I'm Lucywood. In case you didn't know, descriptions begin with a lowercase letter except when uppercase would normally be required or expected. Essentially, you should pretend that the description is appearing in the middle of a normal sentence, and then follow normal language rules. Most terms would not be capitalized if they appeared in the middle of a sentence. However terms such as proper nouns (e.g. the names of specific people, specific places, and specific titles) should be capitalized. Removing pictures

Yes, Trade - I'd mistakenly attached the wanted poster to the WRONG William Macdonald (there are two in the Register of Convicts with different dates of birth etc). The correct one, who was born 28 years earlier, is https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107243435. If you have a look at that one you will see that the poster image and his mug shot are of the same individual. Hi Trade. The Wikidata article names are transcription of the names recorded in the register. By 'alies' do you mean 'alias'? This form of legal naming (as used in the police register) is not an alias. In Scots Law a when referring to a married woman the correct legal style is Forename + Maiden Family Name + OR + Married Family Name. This is covered here http://medievalscotland.org/scotnames/scotnames101.shtml So, in this case the police officers compiling the register have recorded the details of Margaret who was born with the surname Hutcheson and who was later married to a Mr Stewart. In creating the Wikidata articles we've copied the naming exactly from the legal register which we see as best practice.

I hope this helps to understand our approach.

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender system that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our system based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study will start in late January 2022 or early February 2022, and it should take no more than 30 minutes.

Labels, descriptions and other things to improve for painting imports

Hi WATTY62, I noticed you imported quite a few paintings like for example Le Lavage des Moutons (Q109910394): painting by Léon Augustin Lhermitte. For paintings the convention is to use the title of the painting as the label and in the description "painting by <painter>". So for the example:

• The label "Léon Augustin Lhermitte - Le Lavage des Moutons - ABDAG002359" should be changed to "Le Lavage des Moutons"
• The description "artwork in the Aberdeen City Council (Archives, Gallery and Museums Collection)" should be changed to "painting by Léon Augustin Lhermitte"

I did this for this paintings. Can you have a look at the other paintings you imported?

Some other possible improvements based on the example:

• inception (P571) should generally not be "unknown value" especially for painters for which date of birth and death are known. Add the period.
• location (P276) should be added where possible. I found it in your source data

Thanks. Yes - I will get on to fixing those, but not for a couple of weeks (i need to go on a family holiday). The initial upload was a first pass to get some of the AAGM collection made available. We always knew we'd have some tidying to do!

I might get back to you if I have queries about edge cases, but most of it should be straightforward.

Hi Multichill (talk • contribs • logs) I finally found time to tackle this. I started last night with this query to get the works from the AAGM collection. I noted that Spinster (talk • contribs • logs) had fixed quite a few already. I downloaded a CSV and filtered the descriptions in Google Sheets to get the ones with ABD****** in the title. I removed those along with spaces and the trailing characters. I then fixed most using Quickstatements. Now, of 4,233 only 278 have accession numbers in their labels. This is because removing the ABD**** accession numbers would give them the same name and description as another item. This will probably need to be done manually. I know that this doesn't fix all of the issues you raise but it is a good start, I think! Thanks. Ian Watty62 (talk) 16:39, 23 December 2022 (UTC)
