Sourcing taxonomic names[edit]

Thank you for your e-mail. I saw your thread on sourcing and can offer a suggestion: Get the information from Wikispecies. One of the things we've been trying to do there is source all the names with full citations (and not just the abbreviated stuff that typically shows up in papers). For examples of taxa that are well sourced, see the hornworts or many of the Liliales (sensu APG III), both of which I have been working on. For example: species:Nothoceros, species:Hattorioceros, species:Philesiaceae, species:Corsiopsis chinensis, or even species:Lycopodiophyta and species:Magnoliids (page titles have to be capitalized). There are certainly other editors doing the same work in many other taxonomic groups, but as I am less familiar with what they're doing than with what I'm doing, it's easier for me to come up with examples from my own edits. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:39, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! This is very useful, what I thought Wikidata was trying to do. I am trying to add information to Wikidata, update sources, not extract data from it; but Wikidata is just creating a bunch of useless circular references to other Wikipedias. I will add to Wikisource, instead. --AfadsBad (talk) 02:00, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
