Purpose

To convince other people that it is useful to contribute to Wikidata, one has first to show some interesting real world uses of the collected data. This may spark their imagination of what they would like to have, and then the project can achieve critical mass.

Magnus Manske has created some very important tools. One example is Wikidata Query, which enables complex searches of the Wikidata data. The query objects are integrated into the URL and represented by the property and item numbers.

To illustrate the search capabilities of Wikidata Query, I have added statements to Wikidata items of churches in Düsseldorf, Germany. The relevant churches were categorized in the German Wikipedia category "Kirchengebäude in Düsseldorf". I have added or refined the following statements to the items when available: instance of, architect, date of foundation or creation, architectural style, is in the administrative unit of, religion, named after, patron saint. In the "is in the administrative unit" claim, often only Northrhine-Westfalia had been written, apparently by a bot. I have changed that to the relevant city district as the most fine-grained administrative division. This allows for queries of churches in the relevant district. As the city districts are contained in the same tree as Northrhine-Westfalia, also a search for churches in Northrhine-Westfalia remains possible.
