Label confusion[edit]
In some work that I'm doing on how Indian Country in the U.S. is represented in Wikidata, Wikipedia, and other parts of the ecosystem, I came across the issue of two Wikidata items, both labeled "Cherokee Nation" but representing completely different things. Item Q14708404 is a more well-rounded record for the Cherokee Nation today. This item appears to represent a historic time period in Cherokee history and it contains a certain degree of semantic irregularity (map showing part of the Cherokee homeland in Georgia but a coordinate location pointing to Tahlequah, OK, capital of the Cherokee Nation today). I thought to partially address this by adding a parenthetical to the label to at least reduce confusion at that level. More needs to be done to clean up this record.
Though not a part of government or any other official capacity, I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and feel like I can make a judgment call on this record. Skybristol (talk) 23:53, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
