Definition of this item makes no sense[edit]

This item is about a special case of Wikidata property for an identifier (Q19847637) so it is a subclass - but what makes this subclass of identifier properties so special? The description "(a) with single/several issuers; (b) within/without single scheme; (c) available at single/separate places. Unique or not. May combine several. Not IDs with single issuer within single scheme available at single place." is complex, arbitrary, and ambiguous. Should (a), (b), and (c) apply all or any of these criteria? In particular

  • (c) virtually all identifier are available at multiple places (e.g. different copies, applications...)
  • (a) all identifiers listed as instances of this class either had a single issuer or depend on context (b). For instance International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organizations (Q470458) is issued by the ISIL Registration Authority. This agency delegates ISIL namespaces to countries but it is one system. Same applies to many large identifier systems not listed in this class.

Only criteria (b) has a use case: some identifier properties refer to identifiers without a single scheme, e.g. house number (P670) and catalog code (P528). These identifier properties depend on context that needs to be given by a qualifier.

I think the description of this item should be corrected because the current definition just does not make sense. An alternative would be to create a new item and delete the old one. -- JakobVoss (talk) 21:09, 10 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • It worked fairly well to identify cases that didn't work well with Wikibase external identifier functions. You can easily added other subclasses to Q19847637 if it doesn't fit your purposes. There is no single value constraint on P31.
I don't think we have a good formatter url yet for ISIL (at some point we end in dead links or redirects) so if there is effectively a single website (other than Wikidata or its mirrors), it would be correct that that it isn't multi-source.
