First (original) name[edit]
About this edit. On June 18, 1778, the Russian Empress Catherine II the Great issued a decree on the foundation of a fortress and a shipyard, and on October 19, 1778, a fortress, a shipyard and a city were founded, which received the name Kherson in honor of Tauric Chersonesus. On February 4, 1920, Soviet power was established in the city and it became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since that time, the city has an official name in Ukrainian.
Kirovles (talk) 16:37, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
