Ida was a mythological Cretan hunter from a band of virgin warriors that included antoehr Lycaste (no realtion) led by Latonia, the Queen of the woods and stars, in a search for wild animals (Claudian)The description of these ladies "… beautiful though unadorned; red their cheeks, dusty and suffused with sweat; their fierce virginity betrays not their sex; disordered their hair; girldes twain prevent their dresses flowing down below their knees", encouraged us to choose Ida as an appropriate partner for Lindley's "beautiful woman" in naming this genus.
