1887, May 3: The worst mining accident in British Columbia history happened on this day when an explosion rocked the Esplanade No. 1 Mine killing 148 men. The jury blamed the explosion on the firing of an unprepared and badly planted charge that ignited accumulated gas fuelled by coal dust. No criminal negligence was attributed to anyone. (English)
