scope of property

[edit]

@Epìdosis, Marcus Cyron, DerHexer, Jura1, Jahl de Vautban, ChristianKl: Sorry, I didn’t see the discussion. What is the exact scope of this property?

  • Does it only apply to Gods?
  • Does it also cover a byname (Q279239)? Pepin the Short (Q81212)epithet (P8822)the Short or Catherine II of Russia (Q36450)epithet (P8822)the Great? I guess it can’t really be because of the Item data type instead of Monolingual text. Should we discuss another property for this purpose?

--Emu (talk) 18:04, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Emu: It applies not only to gods, although the epithets for gods are nearly the only ones actually having apposite items (see list); patronymics, when having items, are also appliable (e.g. Odysseus (Q47231)epithet (P8822)Laertiades). Considering that the value must be an item, I would consider only values being "proper names" and not common names as "the Short" or "the Great" ... although bynames as "Magnus" (used for Catherine II of Russia (Q36450), Alexander the Great (Q8409), Frederick II of Prussia (Q33550), Charlemagne (Q3044) etc.) might be worth an item. Anyway, a property with "monolingual text" can well be useful in my opinion. --Epìdosis 18:16, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For what I understand of byname (Q279239), epithet (Q207869) may be a subclass of it, just like agnomen (Q2596516) (but the exact distinctions between languages seems a bit confuse). I don't how far we'll be able to use this property outside of items related to antiquity, however ; I'm not even sure we can use it for deities outside of the graeco-roman system. Beside mythology, the next big group I can think of are the few dozens or so of Hellenistic kings, for example Ptolemy I Soter (Q168261)epithet (P8822)Soter (Q2303797). --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 19:06, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
