Distinguishing from sponsor (P859) property

Would someone be able to specify what distinguishes sponsor (P859) from this property. I was under the impression that endorsement was a distinguishing feature, but this seems not to be the case as funder (P8324) is set as a subproperty of sponsor (P859). — Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 19:35, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Ah, I can see how this works. @Liuxinyu970226, Fnielsen:

• sponsor (P859) is the generic superset property indicating any kind of sponsor / supporter;
  • endorsed by (P8001) is for people or organisations who openly supports something, but don't necessarily contribute materially. Examples would be royal families being "patrons" of charities.
  • funder (P8324) is for supporters who contribute financially ("funder")
  • funding scheme (P6195) links to the funding scheme (e.g. funding scheme (P6195) → Jardine Scholarship (Q60742242)); as contrasted to funder (P8324) → Jardine Matheson (Q1683452))

@Liuxinyu970226: An investor wants their money back (either by loan repayment, or by owning a share of the company and taking a share of future profits). A funder pays for a project so that goods and services (e.g. scientific research) may be produced for public / communal benefit. There can be some overlap between the two concepts (e.g. patrons of the arts - if the artwork becomes popular and sells lots of tickets / copies / ad revenue the patron may earn money), but I think the difference between them is sufficiently clear to justify two properties.
