SFZ => PND

All entries in Deutsche Biographie have a GND ID (P227) value in the form "pndXXX", which is also given as the canonical link at the end of every page. The "sfzXXX" ID is historical and just shows the same page as the matching GND form. Therefore:

  • I am replacing all "sfz" values in Wikidata with their canonical "pnd" form
  • I am only using "pnd" in the Mix'n'match catalog
  • I strongly recommend officially deprecating/disallowing the "sfz" form, as it serves no purpose but potentially causes trouble

Wikidata stores ID plus irrelevant URL part

@pigsonthewing, Adam Harangozó, ArthurPSmith:, storing irrelevant URL part is not common practice, and has been undone before, e.g.: Property_talk:P2600#P2600_geni.com_profile_ID_-_Wikidata_does_store_ID_plus_irrelevant_URL_part .

Having "pnd" in the property value is bad for interoperability, as it makes comparison with P227 and P1710 more complicated, string operation would be needed.

Magnus Manske claimed that /All entries in Deutsche Biographie have a GND ID (P227) value in the form "pndXXX"/ - beside finding no source, I have never seen any GND ID that starts with "pnd". Magnus' rip is messy, since it has pnd in the ID. "pnd" should go into the formatter URL as it was in the proposal by Adam before Kolja got involved. Cf.

@Magnus Manske: If you don't have any objection, we can go on with the removal of "pnd". --Epìdosis 18:39, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: why would that user have an extra say? 77.191.43.248 08:59, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Because of this issue related to Mix'n'Match. --Epìdosis 09:43, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: would MnM insert false values by not respecting a constraint stating the regex that is valid for GND IDs? If MnM does not do this, just proceed without further waiting for so far not helpful Magnus Manske. 77.191.43.248 14:02, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Doing… So, @Magnus Manske: has adjusted the Mix'n'Match catalog with the new regex and I have started the substitution through QuickStatements, it will take one or two days. --Epìdosis 09:54, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
@User:Epìdosis: Great! You are supporting the global banned user Conradi. Both (with pnd and without) referr to the same article --Succu (talk) 22:50, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
@Succu: Not depending on who supports the measure, I don't see any advantage in keeping "pnd" while it can be placed in the URL. --Epìdosis 23:00, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Eg: Zitierweise: „Schnitzler, Frank Christoph, Indexeintrag: Deutsche Biographie, https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd1044563761.html [11.03.2020]“! --Succu (talk) 06:39, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Again, "I don't see any advantage in keeping "pnd" while it can be placed in the URL": if "pnd" is always present, I think storing it in the formatter URL is the best solution. --Epìdosis 09:40, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Are you sure? There are two types of ids: sfz[A-Zo]?[0-9-]+ and gnd[0-9X-]+ (e.g sfz68290 for Albert Einstein). --Succu (talk) 19:09, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Each sfz has a "pnd" equivalent (e.g pnd118529579 for Albert Einstein). --Epìdosis 19:53, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Well to late, but there is a good reason why the "irrelevant URL part" is still used in de:Vorlage:Deutsche Biographie. I did explain this on Wikidata:Property proposal/Deutsche Biographie ID. The goal is to link every DtBio person with a GND. They have done a lot the last years, but there are still pages you can't reach after the change of P7902. Example: Dominikus Rainprechter (Q94801893) = https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/sfz141114.html. Also duplicates - and there are still quite a few - can't be shown if you set "pnd" as default. --Kolja21 (talk) 09:10, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Increase coverage

Current coverage is around 7%. @Epìdosis: could you add the value from

I wouldn't add batches of new values until the "pnd" question gets solved. There is no hurry. --Epìdosis 22:00, 8 March 2020 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: it is solved. And it is independent, a simple transformation. "There is no hurry."- any proof that this applies for P7902 coverage more than for all the cases where this "reasoning" is not made by you? "wiki" once stood for fast. It is several years that the values are not in WD.77.191.43.248 08:58, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: do you have technical possibilities to increase the coverage, starting with those that already have GND P227? Only solr is up-to-date, since that comes directly from the database. The beaconfile is handmade and can contain values that are no longer supported. I think this can happen after GND merges, because DtBio would prefer the primary (redirect target) GND ID. But they may implement the change later, so sometimes the values in P227 and P7902 can differ and this be correct. Anyway, if a value is in P227 and in solr it can go into P7902. 77.183.137.67 13:32, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: maybe, maybe not. But GND IDs contain check digits, since only one digit differed, either the old or the new would fail the check digit calculation. If it came from DtBio as you say, then a question is, was existence in GND catalog checked? Copying values without checking is not safe. Rename to Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID

@Epìdosis, Kolja21: currently the name is ambiguous, since DtBio also has internal (SFZ[=Schlüsselfeldzahl?]) IDs. During my clean-up work on GND duplicates I also found at least one case where someone added a SFZ and later corrected themself, this could be avoided by a more precise name. Additionally some readers of items may wonder why DtBio is sorted among the VIAF contributiong sources - stating "Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID" makes the connection more clear. What do you think? IMO it should also be done for Sächsische Biografie ID (Property:P1710), where the GND ID URL redirects to another URL (containing a descriptive ID). DtBio is larger and has more changes, so it is IMO more important to do it for DtBio. HumanAFuser (talk) 10:58, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

In some cases the SFZ ID is still needed, see de:Vorlage:Deutsche Biographie. --Kolja21 (talk) 12:54, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
Example 3 has GND too: https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd125177828.html . Maybe in cases where no GND exists, write "no value" and as refURL provide the sfz-ID-link? So, one keep track of DtBio items without GND IDs. But NDB will hopefully be finished soon and they hopefully will make sure to have a GND for each human. How often is SFZ used in de:Vorlage:Deutsche Biographie and cannot be replaced by a GND? HumanAFuser (talk) 13:25, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
The most cases are solved, see de:Kategorie Diskussion:Wikipedia:NDB-Link ohne GND. --Kolja21 (talk) 13:49, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
@HumanAFuser, Kolja21, Epìdosis: As they internally use their self-assigned SFZ, and it doesn't look like they are planning to change that, and that ID is the one used in their RDF dumps, it would then make sense to propose a new specifically for that. Renaming this one, would make the distincting clearer then. --CamelCaseNick (talk) 02:13, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm not sure if we need a second property "Deutsche Biographie (SFZ) ID". I haven't missed it yet. @PerfektesChaos, Lómelinde: Any comment on that? --Kolja21 (talk) 02:28, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, I do not know anything about properties or wikidata items. --Lómelinde (talk) 04:08, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
I tend to think another properti for "sfz" is not needed, as Kolja21 says. --Epìdosis 08:33, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
WD doesn't even cover all DtBio GND IDs and may still store some that are no longer connected to an item in DtBio, despite the fact that they are well defined, can be checked against the GND database and compared even within Wikidata with the values stores in P227. Also in the section for recommended form of citation DtBio has GND ID-based URLs. Even if without SFZ one cannot reach each DtBio item, it might be easier to ignore these cases or store them as ref-URLs either next to "no value" for P7902 or in "desribed by". DtBio sometimes assigns one GND ID to two different item, their software doesn't prevent that from happening, but then DtBio redirects to a search page. No idea what unexpected behavior will be observed with SFZ IDs. I personally would rather not spend time on that. When the last NDB volume is published I hope they will have a larger effort on getting a GND ID for each SFZ ID. Of course this is not for granted - but then, IMO the site is somehow broken. After WD has complete coverage of all DtBio GND IDs one could compile a list of problematic cases (a: GND ID on 1+ DtBio items, b: DtBio item without any GND ID) and report to DtBio. HumanAFuser (talk) 14:58, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
  • “Deutsche Biographie” is entirely nonsense.
  • “GND” does mean something like “common authoritative identifier”.
    • GND is administered by DNB, the National Library (of German speaking countries). Actually of Germany, but covering Austria and Switzerland as well.
    • GND is a code to be assigned to individuals, locations, abstract concepts, institutions, things.
    • “common” does mean: formerly separated databases for individuals, locations, institutions etc. have been merged into one overall registry: the common authoritative database (GND).
  • GND can be used for many purposes, in libraries, in assigning items in a database like Wikidata, in catalogues. Actually, it is the Q-code.
    • One particular application among others is to connect humans occurring in a biography.
    • “Deutsche Biographie” is something like the English DNB, Dictionary of National Biography. Note that this one is also abbreviated as “DNB”, but a biography is not a library.
    • Since it happens that the dictionary of biographies had good reasons to use the same identifier for people that might lead to mess up spheres.
  • SFZ is the old proprietary identifier within “Deutsche Biographie” before the person or common identifier of National Library records has been compiled.
    • It is expected that SFZ will phase out in the long run, as soon as every individual has a record in national library. Both maintainers are cooperating, and Deutsche Biographie has the ability to create new GND entries.
    • There are cases where identity of persons is unclear, or duplicate entries were merged since it turned out it is one individual occurring under two names, etc. Some persons are rather unknown and could not yet get a GND registration but keep SFZ for the time being.
    • It is not my business whether Wikidata wants to introduce a new property for SFZ.
  • By no means Wikidata should store an SFZ in a GND property nor vice versa.
  • The scope of GND is not “biographical”, but everything in the real world that could receive a Wikidata item. Well, individual humans are one kind of usage.

Regards --PerfektesChaos (talk) 15:07, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

At a second glance, exploring more details. The following information representation is actually intended:
  • Statement: This individual has an entry in “Deutsche Biographie” database aggregation. This entry can be accessed by one of:
    • P227 (GND), preferred
    • SFZ number
The property discussed here is confusing, since it is a duplicate of P227 with invalid description and naming.
Greetings --PerfektesChaos (talk) 18:42, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Regarding what PerfektesChaos said above: it is not entirely nonsense - or at least it hasn't been pointed out on what basis - since it is the ID the DtBio chose, prefixed it with "pnd" and mostly is a valid GND ID. WD is free to choose a subset and only accept valid GND IDs, i.e. if DtBio has a URL path /pnd12345678.html then "12345678" is not a valid GND ID. P7902 is defined to store those DtBio IDs that also are GND IDs. Sometimes DtBio may have a Tn-ID and since Tn-IDs have been removed from GND, WD can choose to not support these any more in P7902. The rationale behind this is, to make maintenance in WD easier while still providing access to many DtBio items. DtBio is only synced with the GND dumps and GND dumps are only published three (?) times per year and with delay, that means after a merge that DtBio may have two GND IDs on different items, while in the GND one ID is already a redirect to the other. HumanAFuser (talk) 20:20, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis, Kolja21: do you think " (GND) " could be added to the property label, so readers looking at the item better see what it is and thus can understand why it is placed in the section of VIAF sources? HumanAFuser (talk) 20:24, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Tn mini items

@Emu, Kolja21, Epìdosis: https://w.wiki/3WHJ : P7902 humans with the fewest statements, at least 100 with only 4 statements, the few I checked had P31, P21, P227, P7902. No VIAF - because they are Tn. Deutsche Biographie without dozens, hundreds, thousands Tn? There is not much to enrich, I would support deleting them, or transfer the Tn-IDs to a new property and state "described at DtBio". They don't fit will with the Tp-items which are about humans and families, while Tn are about names. HumanAFuser (talk) 20:31, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

I checked the first five in the list. I could merge four of them with other items. The fifth contained enough information in the Deutsche Biographie entry. Judging from this example I see no need for deletion. --Emu (talk) 20:52, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
+1. If a person is listed in DtBio we can't delete the item only because they use an invalid GND. Example: Inge Auf dem Hövel (Q94733282) (1910-2002), German drawer and actress. Enriched by Emu. --Kolja21 (talk) 20:56, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
Update Inge Auf dem Hövel: GND 140401261 (Tn) = incorrect identifier value (Q54975531) + new GND 1235789292 (Tp). --Kolja21 (talk) 21:12, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
@HumanAFuser: What a bot could do: Adding reference URL (P854) (sfz link) + retrieved (P813) to every DtBio link with an invalid GND. One year later we could check if the DtBio-GND has changed. --Kolja21 (talk) 22:33, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
@Emu, Kolja21, Epìdosis, Bargioni: "One year later we could check if the DtBio-GND has changed." DtBio is updated three times a year. Bargioni, I saw you added VIAF with batches, could you do that for P7902-mini items, so that they have 5 statements if in VIAF and thus not Tn? Then the Tn are easier to find for Emu and Kolja21 to do what they want with them. I am personally not interested at all to work on not-more-so-well-supported-by-source IDs. Given that DtBio often has several broken links on a given Tn-page, I can imagine they remove Tn at one point. The site looks broken, no idea if the Bavarian BADW and BSB really want to be present in the internet with a site with so many broken links. HumanAFuser (talk) 22:47, 18 June 2021 (UTC) PS: The request to Bargioni is based on the finding that not all are Tn, e.g. I found these in VIAF: [7] [8] HumanAFuser (talk) 22:51, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

I’ve done a quick quick for the first 1.000 entries from this SPARQL query. The majority aren’t Tns, 745 out of 1.000 have regular GND numbers. From the rest (no valid GND identifier) only 4 (!) didn’t have life dates. --Emu (talk) 23:33, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

@Emu: how did you check, in a local GND copy, or with a script via URL? HumanAFuser (talk) 23:52, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

@Emu: can you add VIAF via this method? HumanAFuser (talk) 00:11, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
@Emu: either a lot of editing was done, or there were not 1000 with only four claims. Now there are less than 100. HumanAFuser (talk) 01:01, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
I used the first 1.000 instead of the first 100 from the list, including many with five statements. --Emu (talk) 11:42, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

The are 48 items with less than 5 statements as of now; I suggest using https://w.wiki/3WQE, it is faster. I'm having a look at the list. --Epìdosis 09:50, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: thanks for the better query. I normally go from the item to the DtBio page to see more about the human, then try to find it in WD or VIAF. If not found, I add data from DtBio, e.g. life span or occupation. HumanAFuser (talk) 10:03, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

@Emu, Kolja21, Epìdosis: thank you to all of you! Great team work! HumanAFuser (talk) 13:57, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: I will not work on the list any longer, sorry. I have neither the time nor the patience to participate in a field in which I have to deal with HumanAFuser’s behavior. I’m sorry. Thank you for you work. --Emu (talk) 13:03, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
--Kolja21 (talk) 18:40, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Tn-only items

@Emu, Kolja21, HumanAFuser: Hi again! @Bargioni: has just reported me that many items in https://w.wiki/3XLY appear to contain only Tn-GNDs and correlated Tn-DtBios (now deleted). Could someone of you check them and fix P227 and P7902 or, if impossible (or correct item already exists), create a list of the ones I will have to delete? Thanks, --Epìdosis 11:18, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@Bargioni: has checked through a script the previous query and it results that the following 220 are to be deleted:

The first has valid GND, and is listed in VIAF search https://viaf.org/viaf/search?query=local.names%20all%20%221235789292%22&sortKeys=holdingscount&recordSchema=BriefVIAF - but when clicking on the link, VIAF returns 404. HumanAFuser (talk) 11:32, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

I edited another one [10] @Epìdosis, Emu: I found GND Tp and other stuff in VIAF - and removed Tn from P227 and P7902. HumanAFuser (talk) 11:42, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

Great, thanks for your collaboration. You can remove from the list the not-to-be-deleted ones and you can mark those to-be-deleted with  Delete, I think. Bye, --Epìdosis 11:45, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: if an item only contains P31, sex, first name, P227 and P7902 (=P227) then I am fine if you delete it. In several cases one item about a human with the same name exist, but one cannot verify that the Tn referred to the same human as descibred in the human item. If the items were created based on Tn with P31=human they were wrong from the start, since a Tn was not meant to identify an individual human. HumanAFuser (talk) 14:07, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@HumanAFuser: I agree with this, thanks. --Epìdosis 14:15, 22 June 2021 (UTC) P.S. Please do not delete other users' messages
@Epìdosis: thanks for deleting the ones that I had marked for deletion. To be sure: I would prefer to not mark others, because if you would delete directly if they are not expanded? I looked on several others, they all were unidentifiable "not individualised names". HumanAFuser (talk) 14:26, 22 June 2021 (UTC) @Epìdosis: RE PS. I was just enforcing the official WD policy described at Wikidata:No personal attacks. HumanAFuser (talk) 14:28, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
@HumanAFuser: OK, no problem. Just send a message here when you have checked that all of them are to be deleted. --Epìdosis 14:29, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: you can do it yourself, click on the item, click one link to DtBio and if nothing appears, delete it. These are Tn. It is more than double work, if I check, then write, and then you go to the item to delete it. HumanAFuser (talk) 06:56, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: would you mind to comment on this? 2021-06-22 14:07 I wrote "if an item only contains P31, sex, first name, P227 and P7902 (=P227) then I am fine if you delete it." You replied "I agree with this, thanks." - You can see this yourself if you click on the item, and if it is so, you can delete directly. Why do you need another person to write this down? It's now 2 days. The list has some bugs, so humans are included that have more data. But that is very rare. So, most of the time it means the person checking either expands the item and then has to write that down in the list, or does not expand and writes down "delete". But going to the list in edit mode and writing down keep/delete takes extra time. HumanAFuser (talk) 17:14, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
It was silent agreement, it was fine for me finishing the last quarter; now the check is finished. @HumanAFuser, Kolja21, Emu: I want to thank you all for the great help you provided me. We are doing an excellent work! Good evening, --Epìdosis 19:09, 24 June 2021 (UTC) P.S. Tomorrow I will archive this section and the previous one, if there is no objection, in order to lighten the page.
Agree with archiving. Thank you for reviewing the rest and deleting items. HumanAFuser (talk) 06:09, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: The list is misplaced. The section "Tn mini items" was for items with 4 statements. There is another section "Mini items - 5 statements" where it would belong. HumanAFuser (talk) 07:39, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Broken links in DtBio-Tn-pages

I searched in VIAF for the name, then compared with the data on the DtBio page and then merge [12]. The only benefit to WD is that the former Tp-item is now an item that also contains a Tn twice. The DtBio page: https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd104905379.html

Shall WD link to pages like this? HumanAFuser (talk) 23:58, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

I’m not exactly sure what you mean. If Clemens de Boor (Q52680993) should keep both Deutsche Biographie (GND) ID (P7902) values? Well, yeah, it should. --Emu (talk) 00:03, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
Why? One is not GND anymore. It causes a single-value violation, while there is nothing for GND maintainers to merge, since one value isn't GND. And from the DtBio-links only HBZ gives more information related to the name-human. HumanAFuser (talk) 00:14, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
Why? Because both entries in DtBio exist. And yes, it causes a single-value violation like any other duplicate. Wikidata is keeping these duplicates till the problem is solved. --Kolja21 (talk) 01:29, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

Another example, this time even the HBZ link yields no result https://www.deutsche-biographie.de/pnd105324000.html

I enriched Horst Döhnert (Q95006759) and filed a report at de:Wikipedia:GND/Fehlermeldung/Juni_2021#Todesjahr_nach_1850. I’m not quite sure what you are trying to say with your list, to be honest. --Emu (talk) 11:31, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
@Emu: "I’m not quite sure what you are trying to say with your list, to be honest." - why "honest"? are you not honest, when you leave out that word in other statements? What do you mean by "I’m not quite sure what you are trying to say with your list"? - It is not my list. It is a list describing the state of links at a web page, which fits to the title of this section "Broken links in DtBio-Tn-pages". HumanAFuser (talk) 13:56, 19 June 2021 (UTC)
If an ID is marked as incorrect identifier value (Q54975531) it makes no sense to use this ID for a search in OGND etc. --Kolja21 (talk) 15:26, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: can you archive this section? DtBio said they think they deleted any Tn-page. HumanAFuser (talk) 16:12, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

P7902 clean-up - 8-digit IDs removed from DtBio and P7902

The ID dump from DtBio that I made some days ago contained eight 8-digit IDs, that were not GND IDs. I checked them, and they are all removed on their site. I removed them from P7902.

@Emu, Epìdosis, Kolja21: feel free to verify if they have been deleted on DtBio. HumanAFuser (talk) 09:50, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

@Epìdosis: I think this can be archived. What do you think? HumanAFuser (talk) 12:49, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

I agree, all of them are inexistent. --Epìdosis 12:51, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
@Epìdosis: how can this section be archived? HumanAFuser (talk) 21:51, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

DtBio humans in 16 days plus 18937

Quantity of items that have a DtBio ID: 2021-06-01 = 626536, 2021-06-17 = 607599 [13] HumanAFuser (talk) 12:04, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

I think that this discussion is resolved and can be archived. If you disagree, don't hesitate to replace this template with your comment. Emu (talk) 13:58, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
