Usage notesOpen access (Q232932) status should be used for URLs under open licenses or under open access policies (usually labeled as open access). For URLs that are just free (like bronze open access), but may change their status in future, free to read (Q24707952) status should be used (usually labeled as free or free access). If URL is free to read after registration then registration required (Q107459441) status should be used. If URL is under paywall then paywall (Q910845) status should be used. While primarily intended for identifiers and URLs, the property may also be used directly as main value to indicate the access status of items such as the proceedings of an academic conference (Q2020153) or conference series (Q15900647), news media (Q1193236) or broadcaster (Q15265344).

Extend from documents to collections/archives?[edit]

I think this property is useful not only for single documents, but also for collections of documents or archives. Im currently collect and add instances of newspaper clippings archive (Q65651503) - see list. For people interested in finding sources it is important if and how they can access these collections. Therefore I've experimentally added online access status (P6954) as a qualifier to collection or exhibition size (P1436) (examples on the list), and I wonder if there would be objections to this use of the property. In course of the above mentioned work, I came accross the extensive press archives of the German Bundestag (Q65652991), which is accessible only to members of the parliament and their assistants.

Such a situation may also occur within research data repositories, where access to certain datasets/DOIs may be restrictend to a certain institution and its cooperation partners.

Therfore I suggest to add closed user group (Q66317415) as an allowed value for this property. --Jneubert (talk) 09:53, 9 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As already suggested in the property proposal for resources, I suggest adding this as an allowed value. It will be useful as well with collections, which are only in parts freely accessible. --Jneubert (talk) 16:41, 14 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding possibility of using as main value[edit]

Hi, following the discussion on Wikidata:Property_proposal/access_status_of_contents I have changed the constraints to allow the use of this property as main value, and updated the Wikidata usage text to reflect this. If you object, please let me know! --A3nm (talk) 16:30, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Federated access[edit]

Not sure about federated access and/or any account/registration needed (not necessarily at the provider) …

  • is it covered by registration required (and "… user must register an account with the provider" description should be changed), or
  • is it covered by closed user group, or
  • is it covered by something else, or
  • another property value item should be created for that?
