Some updates[edit]

Hi y'all,

Pinging the top-5 users of this property: @Jheald, Magnus Manske, Gerwoman, Tagishsimon, Epìdosis: + @smirkybec:

First, for the records, I just added some basic constraints to this property, it seems to work well, only a few items to clean. More constraint should/could be added but I'm not sure exactly what the Dictionary of Irish Biography contains (input welcome here ).

Then, I would like to reach the 100% but I have some question and I would need some help. First things first, how many id is there? Jheald added Dictionary of Irish Biography ID (P6829)number of records (P4876)10 615point in time (P585)2020-01-31 last January (Special:Diff/1107453431) but 1. there is no source (https://dib.cambridge.org/faqs.do says « 9,000 lives ») 2. does the number include the sub-id like "a0093-A" (see on Eleanor Alexander (Q63307721)) or not? 3. does this number change a lot over time?

Finally, any help is welcome to add missing id, especially with mix'n'match.

The DIB has a new website and URLs for biographies now include the name as well as the numerical ID: https://www.dib.ie/biography/parnell-charles-stewart-a7199. Opera hat (talk) 10:08, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald, Opera hat: I have updated the bio and the search strings, and deprecated the old. It is taking forever to update the string, so I cannot check for truth in an item. And I did it to DOI as 1) hopefully more resilient, and 2) just damn easier.

Jheald adding you in case you need to do anything for your stats.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:32, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

mother! The DOI is broken. I have written to RIA and asked for them to look at the issue.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:43, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
emailed DIB there response
DOI's have yet to be fully implented in on the DIB OA platform, however we do expect them to be in place soon. We shall make an announcment when they have been put in place.
 — billinghurst sDrewth 11:10, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@billinghurst: any update? @smirkybec: is there something you could do on your side? Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 11:04, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON: no idea from me. I haven't been doing Irish bio stuff since about then.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:28, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@VIGNERON: I had been in contact with the staff in the RIA looking after the DIB, and they were going to send me a new dataset. I'll send them another email this week to see if we can shake it loose from them. Smirkybec (talk) 17:26, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Smirkybec: Did you ever hear any more from them? It seems very frustrating that (a) previously established DOIs are broken and (b) there seems to be no way to navigate to an article just from its ID.
It seems the DIB's new web platform was built and maintained in-house, so it ought to be possible for them to at least fix (b) relatively easily. Jheald (talk) 17:16, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jheald: Unfortunately not good news. This was the reply I received on 8 December: "the update is that it’s still very much happening, but I need to do a little more work on the data and then get our DOIs registered but I do see it happening pretty soon (I can’t commit to a solid timeframe because I have a lot of projects on at the moment, but I’d like to try to get a batch registration off this week if I can)". I didn't hear back, so presumably it has not progressed since. Smirkybec (talk) 17:26, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DOIs still broken. Any news @Smirkybec:? Should we maybe create a new property? Thanks, --Epìdosis 18:49, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis: I just emailed and it was delayed due to other priorities. They have advised not to create a new identifier, and that the new DOIs should be registered next week. They will keep me updated! Smirkybec (talk) 13:03, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis: @Jheald: the DIB have just emailed me a spreadsheet of all the entries in the DIB with the new DOIs - what is the best thing to do now, or who should I share this with? It would have all the entries in the DIB, which would include some people with no Wikidata entry yet. Smirkybec (talk) 10:40, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Smirkybec: Excellent news! The file doesn't include the old IDs used here, does it? Anyway, the spreadsheet can surely be used to create a new Mix'n'match; e.g. @Bargioni: could do it. But first we should decide if we want to store the new IDs in a new property (probably better) or in this property removing the existing values. --Epìdosis 10:53, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis: It kind of does, from the email I received "The numbering in the DOIs, starting 000001 and ending 010246, correspond to the numbers prefaced by ‘a’ in the CUP URLs/and the new DIB URLs at DIB.ie, which might be useful for mapping the DOIs". I don't have a strong opinions on retaining the old IDs or creating new ones, I'd just love to have the full DIB set here so that all those in the DIB turn up in red lists etc. I have email user set up, so whomever can drop me a mail and I can share the file. Smirkybec (talk) 11:20, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Smirkybec: OK, now I understand. Not new IDs in toto, but a simple format change. This can be managed through {{Autofix}} continuing to use this property. Tomorrow it will be OK, then we will import a new Mix'n'match catalog. --Epìdosis 12:38, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Just realised that all IDs have been changed and the previous IDs in the format like "a\d{4}\d?(-[A-D])?" have disappeared (see e.g. IDs like "a5414" for the following entity: https://www.dib.ie/biography/Malley-James-Young-Jim-a5414 ). These old IDs are still relevant, as they are still part of the URIs and are also included in the original XML files of each DIB entry (see e.g. https://www.dib.ie/sites/default/files/dib-xml-archive/9780521633314_5414.xml - it contains id="a5414" doi="10.1017/DIB005414_2" in the first <article> tag). Would it be better to retain both IDs using different properties? (as suggested above) To me one ID is the actual internal ID used by the DIB and one is simply part of the DOIs (which are still not working...). BadmotorF (talk) 12:32, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis BadmotorF (talk) 12:17, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BadmotorF: complex issue; the DOI in the XML files seem all broken. In the case of James Young Malley (Q104621069) https://doi.org/10.3318/dib.005414.v1 doesn't work, while https://doi.org/10.3318/dib.005414.v2 works; it might be the case to include in the IDs ".v1" and ".v2" in order to resolve the issue. Regarding storing the old IDs with initial "a", I'm neutral as of now. --Epìdosis 12:42, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Items[edit]

I have divided the online and print versions of DIB into three separate items so that references can be generated correctly on Wikipedia. (See Talk:Q5273969.) Dictionary of Irish Biography ID (P6829) is still here, but it's only associated with the online version now, not the print versions too, as was the case before. format[edit]

The regex "a\d{4}\d?(-[A-D])?" is inaccurate given Gardner Budd (Q5497436)
"001105" works -> [1]
"a1105" does not -> [2] Bogger (talk) 12:11, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bogger: I edited it. The format will be massively corrected in a few days. --Epìdosis 12:45, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like these updates have just gone through. But there is still a problem where some of the entries have been revised. E.g. James Young Malley (Q104621069) points to https://doi.org/10.3318/dib.005414.v1 but this does not resolve, as the version of the article online is an updated version, with DOI https://doi.org/10.3318/dib.005414.v2 -- Jheald (talk) 18:28, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis: It looks like this is giving a "The DIB id xxxxxx is not valid" error on pages that use the authority control template. [3][4] gobonobo + c 21:17, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gobonobo: Lines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module:Authority_control#L-282 and 283 of the module generating the template should be updated to the new format. I cannot do directly it because (understandably) the module is protected. --Epìdosis 23:35, 4 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis: Thank you so much! I've put in an edit request over there. gobonobo + c 01:00, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Epìdosis:@Gobonobo: Is this format still up to date? I'm having trouble with Nellie Bushell (Q122915346) -Bogger (talk) 18:23, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bogger: As of now the property links to the DOIs of the articles; https://www.dib.ie/biography/bushell-ellen-sarah-nellie-a10321 simply (and strangely) hasn't (yet?) a DOI, so cannot be linked for this reason. But in other items the links seem to work well, this seems an exception. --Epìdosis 19:53, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The url for v2 of Nora O'Mahony (Q123856907) does not match the formatter. could we append v1, only if there is no version? -Bogger (talk) 00:31, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
