- A = approved (it applies to minerals approved after the establishment of the IMA in 1958).
- G = grandfathered (it applies generally to minerals considered valid species, but not regularly approved by the IMA-CNMNC by 2011).
- Rd = redefined (it applies to existing minerals which were redefined during the IMA era). The mineral might have been renamed at the same time.
- Rn = renamed (it applies to existing minerals which were renamed during the IMA era).
- Q = questionable (it applies to poorly characterized minerals, whose validity could be doubtful).
- IMA status - Q13406837
- Note: old minerals are 'approved' (A) or 'published without approval' (N) or 'grandfathered' (G). Reference handbooks are Dana's System of Mineralogy (1892) 6th ed (first, second and third appendix) and Dana's System of Mineralogy, 7th ed (vol. I (1944), vol. II (1951) and vol. III ("silica minerals", 1962)). References on "Handbook of Mineralogy" are accepted: Deer W A, Howie R A and Zussman J (1963) Rock-forming minerals, vol. 2, chain silicates, for instance. Many old minerals got discredited in the mass-discreditation of GQN minerals (IMA 2006-C), valid or questionable minerals got grandfathered. 'Q' is for questionable minerals and 'D' for discredited minerals. The fusion of the GQN list with the ARD list resulted in the first IMA Master list of minerals.

If a mineral has two of these labels then qualifiers should say something like "reason = ..."
Review current values[edit]
I think current 13 values that are in use and listed under constraints need some refinement. This talk page originally listed six values that were rather straightforward: A, G, Rn, Rd, Q were the same that are defined in preface of IMA mineral list, and for discredited (D) it was also quite clear it was for minerals that IMA previously listed under one of five other statuses. Subsequent changes to labels of these statuses and new statuses however are quite confusing. For some it isn't clear why are they associated to IMA at all, some labels conflictingly refer to both mineral species and names. Here's my attempt to understand some of these statuses:
auxiliary status– items currently using this value apparently refer to sources published before 1959, however the status itself seems to be an ad hoc one and unrelated to IMA. Instead of giving this pre-IMA status as "IMA status" for an unknown reason, it'd seem more appropriate to just use stand-alone described by source (P1343) statement to make reference to older sources that describe the mineral.discredited mineral and/or non mineral– no indication how exactly is this different from original Q13406849.approved, preferred name– again, no indication how is this different from original Q13406835. I checked a couple of minerals with this value and in IMA mineral list their status is simply "A".discredited before CNMNC/ CNMMN approval– again, if it's pre-IMA, then why is it given as "IMA status"?revalidated mineral(R) – what, from where? I checked a couple of minerals that currently have this status and in IMA mineral list their status is instead "Rd".- For some complicated labels with commas and "or" (e.g. "discredited mineral, invalid name, abandoned species, rejected species or withdrawn application" – Q13406849) it isn't clear if "discredited", "invalid" etc. is supposed mean the same or whether there is some distinction. Also it's important, especially on Wikidata, not to mix concepts (i.e. mineral species) and lexicographical data (i.e. names, synonyms etc.). It'd be more clear to stick to original statuses, e.g. if in IMA list it's simply "approved" then let's say so also on Wikidata, instead of "approved mineral and/or valid name" and "approved, preferred name".
- published without approval (N) and hypothetical mineral (H) – these statuses appear in some earlier versions on IMA mineral lists, and so it makes sense to use these accordingly as the former status of some minerals. However, out of items that I currently checked several have status Q16441788 unsourced and non-matching with the actual status in IMA mineral list. So all uses of these values should probably be checked to make sure that they again don't refer to more loose description from some other source that necessarily don't compare well with IMA mineral list usage.
Moreover, at some point property label has been changed from "IMA status" to "IMA status and/or rank", but without indicating what is "IMA rank", where does it come from, how is this different from "IMA status" and why is this combined with the latter.
So all in all it looks like it'd be better to narrow down current values of this property to eight values (A, G, Rn, Rd, Q, D, N, H). Then hopefully it'd be clear when which value should be used and which items should have this property at all. Then with this cleared up, hopefully it'd also be possible to use this property to query, say, all mineral species currently in IMA mineral list (using preferred rank where necessary). - approved, preferred name (A') – these are minerals approved by IMA/CNMNC, in the 60s IMA/CNMNC choose one preferred name. One mineral, one specific and unique name. Each approved mineral gets an unique IMA number. 'IMA number, broad sense' here on Wikidata is used for special procedure too (IMA1962 s.p., IMA1967 s.p., IMA1968 s.p., IMA1971 s.p. and IMA1980 s.p., for instance) and IMA/CNMNC meeting decisions (IMA2015-B, IMA2015-E, IMA2015-F, IMA2015-G, IMA2015-H, IMA2015-I, IMA2015-L, for instance; these are all IMA2015 s.p. in the IMA Master List of Minerals)
- discredited mineral (D') – these names are redundant nowadays
- discredited mineral and/or non mineral (D") – these type materials have been discredited, and so mineral chemical formula is now hypothetical
- "discredited mineral, invalid name, abandoned species, rejected species or withdrawn application" – these names are used by the IMA/CNMNC, the chairmen used them for different purposes
- discredited before CNMNC/ CNMMN approval – some minerals were discredited on Mineralogical Magazine and American Mineralogist before 1959
- revalidated mineral (R) – this status was used in the beginning of the IMA/CNMNC era. Nowadays, a revalidated mineral is redefined and gets a new IMA nummer
- published without approval (N) and hypothetical mineral (H) – a mineral without type material is hypothetical, a mineral published without IMA/CNMNC approval has status (N)

- I'm afraid this raises more questions than it answers. Anyway, thanks for phasing out "auxiliary status" in the meantime. Also, recently I finished reviewing all items that linked these other confusing values. I made IMA statuses in these items to be in accord with statuses provided in IMA master lists. As a consequence I redirected values that appear to be redundant.
- I still suggest that simpler and otherwise clearer labels should be restored, namely "approved mineral (A)" for Q13406835 and "IMA status" for the property itself, again matching usage in IMA master lists. 2001:7D0:81FD:BC80:1567:7468:4902:150D 10:22, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
