Discussion[edit]

Problem with female players[edit]

This property can not be used for female players (at least not in the configuration at the moment). Female players have a different url in front of their ID. For example, at Anja Hegeler (Q551113), the link leads to http://www.olimpbase.org/players/8y00oauf.html , which gives a 404. Correct would be "http://www.olimpbase.org/playersw/8y00oauf.html" ([1]). At the moment, 226 items have this wrong link:

SELECT ?players ?playersLabel
WHERE
{
    ?players wdt:P106 wd:Q10873124 .
    ?players wdt:P21 wd:Q6581072 .
    ?players wdt:P3940 ?olimpbase.

	SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "en" }
}

Any suggestions how to solve this?Steak (talk) 13:19, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@MisterSynergy, Wesalius, Edgars2007: Any suggestions?? Steak (talk) 19:18, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for ping. The external database has a strange design. We have a couple of options:
  • Change formatter url to http://www.olimpbase.org/players$1.html and include the slash and all other extra letters before the slash in the identifier. This would mean that we have to update all identifiers. Should be possible automatically.
  • Propose for another identifier for women. However, there are more tokens in use other than '' (male elite) and 'w' (female elite), so I don’t know how many properties we would actually need.
I am in favor of the first option. —MisterSynergy (talk) 19:28, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Updating the identifier is the way to go. Wesalius (talk) 06:28, 17 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Who can change the property and subsequently the items? Steak (talk) 07:40, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
All uses can be found here:
SELECT ?item ?olimpbase ?snak {
  { ?item p:P3940/ps:P3940 ?olimpbase . BIND('mainsnak' AS ?snak) } UNION
  { ?item ?anyprop [ pq:P3940 ?olimpbase ] . BIND('qualifier' AS ?snak) } UNION
  { ?item ?anyprop [ prov:wasDerivedFrom [ pr:P3940 ?olimpbase ] ] . BIND('reference' AS ?snak) }
}
Try it!
@Wesalius: do you mean that the formatter url should be changed to http://www.olimpbase.org/players$1.html and the identifier would be whatever should replace $1? This seems doable to be replaced automatically. However, it requires some coding. —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:51, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
yes, that is what I mean. Thanks for your effort on the topic so far. Wesalius (talk) 19:27, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I put this to my worklist—which is a bit crowded right now, but it will not get lost. —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:54, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Steak, Wesalius: I have meanwhile looked at the identifiers and created a list of new identifier values. Before I can update them, there needs to be some manual work done. First of all there are a couple of items with OlimpBase Chess Olympiad player ID (P3940) links that I cannot find in the index page of the external database:

  1. Dinara Saduakassova (Q18388576) -- [2]
  2. Hans-Ulrich Grünberg (Q1578225) -- works
  3. Hichem Hamdouchi (Q1617234) -- works
  4. Hiong Liong Tan (Q2227116) -- [3]
  5. Rinat Jumabayev (Q4181620) -- works
  6. Ruslan Ponomariov (Q207723) -- [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]
  7. Cristhian Cruz Sánchez (Q11691651) -- works

Whether the values given in those items work or not was not yet tested by me. Furthermore, there are 63 items with more that one match for the new identifier. Which one to chose?

Regards, MisterSynergy (talk) 17:15, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the given IDs work, for the other I added next to the link above the correct link(s). Sometimes there are quite a lot of profiles. I think this was not considered in the proposal. At the moment the whole property is a bit questionable. Steak (talk) 17:53, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; I suggest to update the links manually checked by you manually as well in the items, once we changed the formatter URL. The external database has indeed some flaws, but I’d still consider it valuable. There will be some single value constraints, but this is the case for most external id properties. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:00, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One should have always only one link, namely that one to the Olympiads Statistics. All others can be reached via the dropdown menu on each profile page. If there are then still two different proile pages, this is a database duplicate (two spellings, marriage,....). Steak (talk) 18:23, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to identify the ones to use then. There are still some duplicates due to players who apparently attended male (open) and female olimpiads; there are also a couple of new players which need to be looked up manually. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:30, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Something has to happen here, the problem still exists. Steak (talk) 13:05, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It is still on my worklist, but apparently not with high priority :-) —MisterSynergy (talk) 08:28, 17 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

May 2018[edit]

To make progress here, there is a now a section in the Con-Vio list that lists all female players with the non-working link. Steak (talk) 14:15, 17 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

After having looked at the problem once again, I tend to propose for a new property for Women's Olympiad participants, in contrast to this Open Olympiad property. The new property would have its own formatter URL (including the w), and this property P3940 could also be used for women who participated in the open Olympiad. —MisterSynergy (talk) 07:21, 20 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I forgot about the female players taking part at the open event, for which the link works. I agree that under this circumstances, a new property would be the best solution. Steak (talk) 08:33, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The website has information about other competitions beyond Open and Women Olympiads as well. Do you think we should consider them to be relevant for Wikidata, or can we just ignore them? —MisterSynergy (talk) 09:06, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would ignore them, at least for the moment. This website has a crappy URL and ID system, so we should not invest too much time in it. Steak (talk) 09:41, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. One could use described at URL (P973) for players that have an entry in that database, but didn’t compete at the Open or Women’s Olympiad.
Are you going to propose a new property, or shall I? We also need to adjust labels of this one, I think. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:31, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I would be grateful if you could do it :) Steak (talk) 13:46, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OlimpBase Women's Chess Olympiad player ID (P5224)[edit]

There is now a new property OlimpBase Women's Chess Olympiad player ID (P5224) for the participants of the Women's Chess Olympiad. If noone else does, I’ll move the affected claim to that property soon. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:56, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

All invalid P3940 suitable for the new property have now been moved. The old ever invalid ones with P3940 have been removed. —MisterSynergy (talk) 19:36, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! So this issue has finally been resolved after less than one year ;) Steak (talk) 10:55, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
