Database down

A few days ago the database seems to have broken down. Maybe they'll fix it soon, I don't know. If they haven't by next week, I'll try contacting them. Jonathan Groß (talk) 06:52, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

IDs and licensing changed

I just noticed that the Database of Classical Scholars has undergone some changes. In addition to having a new home at Rutgers University (since March 2017), it has adopted a new look. But there are two further changes, major ones, which concern Wikidata and its sister projects to a great degree.

The first one is that the IDs of the content pages have changed. Right now it is impossible to link to the database entries using the old IDs – which were supposed to be stable but, as it turn out, aren't. The new IDs seem to consist of a four digit number as well as a name string. The latter part is compulsory, as https://dbcs.rutgers.edu/all-scholars/8493-abbott-frank-frost links to Frank Frost Abbott (who used to be number #1 in the database) but https://dbcs.rutgers.edu/all-scholars/8493 yiels an error page.

The second major change concerns the licensing of the contents. While the Database of Classical Scholars and its contents used to be released under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0, the bottom of the host page now says: "Copyright © 2018, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution. All rights reserved." This might have ramifications for our using the data from the DBCS in Wikidata and Wikipedia.

I have written to the editors of the database about these issues and hope to hear from them soon.

Update: The editors just responded to my email. They assured me that the Database is still released under CC BY-SA 4.0 and that they'll change the copyright notice accordingly. They also promised to find a solution for the IDs. Jonathan Groß (talk) 16:21, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
